Agenda vs. Learning Targets
If you have questions, please contact Ms. Miller.
What is the difference between an agenda and learning targets?
Agenda:
- An agenda is a list of tasks the class or students need to accomplish throughout the class period. For instance:
- Bell ringer review (5 minutes)
- Notes over characterization techniques
- Close read pages 2-6
- Check in with teacher
- Complete pre-writing activity
- Finish thesis project from yesterday
Learning Targets:
- A learning target is the lesson's objective.
- Every lesson should have at least one learning target, but frequently there can be roughly 3-5 learning targets within a lesson.
- It is what you want the students to learn. (They may complete assignment as a means to achieve the learning goal, but the assignment is NOT the learning target.)
- For instance, you may have a vocabulary worksheet listed in your agenda but your learning target is NOT for the student to complete the worksheet.
- Some examples of learning targets include:
- Define characterization
- Provide 2 examples of characterization in the text
- Compare how 2 authors use characterization to advance the plot
- As a teacher, your learning target is almost always an articulation of what you want students to walk out of the class knowing how to do.
