Students with Disabilities

Counselors are to follow the protocols below pertaining to students with disabilities:

  1. Under no circumstance should the disability qualification be a topic of discussion. This is confidential information.
  2. It is a counselor's responsibility to be aware of students with disabilities on their caseload.
  3. The counselor should refer to the symbol in Progress Book/DASL to view a student's accommodations and to determine if they are excused the consequences from any state standardized assessments.
      • The counselor should NOT contact the student's intervention specialist to ask if they will be excused from the consequences of testing, to advocate for an excusal, or to seek out information about graduation eligibility.
  4. A student with a disability MUST attempt a state standardized assessment at least once to be excused from the consequences of the state standardized assessment.
  5. If there is no indication in Progress Book/DASL that the student with a disability is excused from the consequences of state testing, it should be assumed that the student will have to meet all graduation requirements that general education students must meet.
  6. If there is an indication in Progress Book/DASL that a student with a disability is excused from the consequences of a state standardized assessment, it is NOT an indication that they are excused from ALL state standardized assessments.
      • For instance, a student may be excused from the consequences of the math EOC, but NOT excused from the consequences of any other EOC.
  7. The special education department will amend all IEPs and inform counselors by the end of the day on Tuesday, May 15 as to any additional 12th grade students with disabilities that are excused from the consequences of state standardized assessments that had not been previously.
  8. If a counselor knows that a student is on an IEP or 504 and the student does NOT have an alert in Progress Book/DASL indicating that they have a disability, the counselor should email Dr. Williams.
