Lavender Aromatherapy May Prevent Falls in the Elderly

Page 2 of the Essential Edge newsletter for February 2013 cites that

"Families of the elderly live in fear of an accidental fall of their loved one, which often means a broken hip and the beginning of the slidedownhill to death.

Researchers at the Tohoka University Graduate School of Medicine in Sendai, Japan, tested the effects of lavender olfactory stimulation intervention on the incidence of falls in elderly nursing home residents.

....

Several studies demonstrate lavender's energizing and stimulating effects. In research conducted by Yamanashi Prefectual University in Japan, researchers analyzed three groups during a recess from work sessions: a placebo group not exposed to aromas, a group exposed to jasmine aroma, and a group exposed to lavender aroma... The lavender group had significantly higher concentration levels during drowsy time period (in the afternoon)

The study concludes, "Although lavender is a sedative-type aroma, use during recess periods after accumulation of fatigue seems to prevent deterioration of performance in susequent work sessions"

...

145 patients 65 years of age and older were either given an unscented placebo patch or a lavender-scented patch.

There were fewer falls in the lavender group and a lower incidence rate of falls in this group as well."

Dizziness And Vertigo Were Debilitating For Mom

Around October 2012 my mom got very bad vertigo that lasted for about a month. It was so bad it made was difficult for her to walk, even to the restroom. We went to the doctor twice for help, but nothing they recommended helped.

My mother's vertigo was so bad that she had to come live with us. I was new to Young Living essential oils at the time and so they were new to my mother as well. She was trepidatious about letting me put oils on her, so I put a few drops of lavender on a cotton ball and asked her to smell it as often as possible. Finally after about a week, one night she allowed me to put lavender oil on the bottom of her feet and also her shoulders.

The next morning when she woke up, the vertigo was gone! I found out from her then that she had been smelling the cotton ball frequently throughout the day for the past week. I didn't even realize this at the time because she had been so skeptical about it. I didn't know that she had been smelling lavender in secret!

Since that time (about 8 months ago) there have been two instances where the vertigo has come back for very short time. When it has come back she has smelled lavender frequently throughout the day and within 2 days the vertigo has been gone. Now she tries to just smell lavender daily to keep vertigo from returning.

I hope this information will be helpful to you or someone you know. I have never experienced vertigo but from what I saw it is very debilitating and extremely difficult to live with. When my mother had it she would frequently cry in misery, feel like it was never going to end and felt without hope at times. It is wonderful to know that Young Living oils can potentially rid someone else too of this terrible condition!

Please use only Young Living oils are they are therapeutic-grade. I do not feel you will get these results with any other brand as cheaper brands are adulterated with chemicals to make them stretch further. I use these oils for many other uses and love Young Living products!
