Here is additional information.

In the world of aromatherapy, there are 3 schools of thought. The first is the British school, which teaches the dilution of essential oils, and its application -often through massage - for relaxation and balancing. The majority of Australian aromatherapists are trained in the British system. Secondly there is the German school, which relies on the aroma of the oils, rather than direct application. And thirdly, there is the French school, which treats essential oils as a valid form of medicine, to be used as in any other medical protocol - internally, by injection, topically (undiluted), rectally, and vaginally. As Dr Penoel said, "In my country, we've given millions and millions of clinical treatments with essential oils." It is from this medical application of essential oils that the term "Aromatic Medicine" was derived.

Dr Penoel described the differences between the 3 schools very humorously, when he said: "The German system of aromatherapy (smell) is comparable to platonic love. You cannot make babies with platonic love. The English system is like flirting. You still cannot make babies. The French system of aromatherapy is like "The Full Monty", and it will make babies!"

In France, Doctors trained in aromatic medicine will often prescribe essential oils in preference to antibiotics. But first, they will conduct an "aromatogram". This is a simple test involving taking a sample (e.g.. a swab) of a patient's diseased area. This swab is sent away to a laboratory, and tested with a wide variety of essential oils and allopathic drugs, to see which is the most effective against the specific disease or condition.

There are many cases where essential oils are more effective than antibiotics. However, in the case where an antibiotic proves more effective, the doctor still needs to weigh up the potential side-effects of the antibiotic (such as its long-term effects on gut flora), before deciding which treatment should be undertaken.

If essential oils are the chosen treatment, the doctor will supply the patient with essential oils, and instructions on where and how to use them, and in what proportions to mix them up. This means that patients are more involved in preparing their own mixtures and remedies than in traditional allopathic medicine.

Methods of application

From Advanced Aromatheraoy by Kurt Schnaubelt (translated from German)

Oral and external application

When taken orally, the greater part of essential oils is absorbed by the mouth or throat, the esophagus, the stomach, or the duodenum and the small intestine as the oils travel along the digestive path. From there, essential oils travel to the liver, where they are metabolized, meaning they are chemically linked to other molecules. They are thereby transformed into a water-soluble state to be processed and eliminated by the metabolism. This means their lipophilic qualities are lost, and effects tied to the lipophilic character of oils are no longer present. Research and experience have shown, however, that ingested oils still have very potent effects in the urogenital tract. Therefore, taking essential oils orally makes the most sense when we want them to interact with the liver or kidneys.

Using essential oils by rubbing them into the skin or via inhalation is in many cases much more effective than oral delivery.

Because oils have the ability to penetrate tissue very quickly and enter the capillaries, this ensures distribution throughout the body.

An especially effective form of essential oil application is to massage the oil into the soles of the feet. With this application, immediate absorption into the liver, as is the case when oils are ingested, is prevented, and therefore the immediate processing (linking to other molecules, making oil molecules hydrophilic) in the liver is also avoided. In this fashion essential oils reach the lower bronchial capillaries and – via the heart-lung-circulatory system-the whole organism unprocessed, in their original state.

Because thyme and oregano oils cannot be used in the regular topical mode, massaging these oils into the soles of the feet is especially useful for small children. Applied via the feet, thyme and oregano oils turn out to be well tolerated and highly effective.

Suppositories

The use of suppositories is well established in French aromamedicine. When oils penetrate the tissue around the rectum, they are absorbed in veins, bypassing the liver, and are consequently fed into the heart-lung-circulatory system, and from there into the circulatory system.

  • acts topically (in-situ) if used for vaginal disorders

  • absorbed readily by the afferent veins to the internal iliac vein, and by the pelvic-lymphatic system

Mouth and Throat

For disinfecting the mouth and throat essential oils can be taken in small doses (1 to 3 drops) on a charcoal tablet which is allowed to disintegrate slowly in the mouth.

For a mouthwash essential oils are mixed with a liquid food-emulsifier. A few drops in a glass of water will suffice.

The Nose

Hazelnut is a good carrier oil for using essential oils as nose drops. Ratio: 4 drops of essential oil in approximately 10 milliliters hazelnut oil. An especially effective method is to put a few drops of essential oil on a small square of paper towel, roll up the towel, and place it in the nostrils. Not only will the nasal passages open up, but signs of a cold will disappear overnight.

Inhalation

Electrical diffusers are suitable for inhaling essential oils. One session normally lasts between 10 and 15 minutes. For respiratory condition it is often very effective to leave the diffuser on overnight in the bedroom at the lowest setting.

Not as involved, but very effective, is placing one drop of oil on a bed pillow, or putting some drops of oil either on a piece of paper towel and placing it directly in the nose or in an asthma inhaler and breathing through it several times a day.

My note: Gary Young diffusers have superior technology: they do not heat up the oil. For breathing problems, it might be best to use the diffuser that does not use water, not to create humidity.

Shower

One of the quickest and most effective means of application is simply to rub a small amount of essential oil over the entire body. This is difficult when the skin is dry, as the oil is absorbed too quickly and sticks to those spots where it is first applied. To ensure a more even distribution, apply a small amount of oil (1 to 2 milliliters) while taking a shower. Do this by beginning to shower, then interrupt your shower for a moment, and apply a small amount of oil while the skin is still wet. Because of their lipothilic quality (ability to dissolve in fats, oils) , essential oils will be absorbed instantaneously, the shower can be continued within 15 to 20 seconds.

TIP: Always shake the Roll-On’s first before dispensing them. Gary also mentioned that you can roll RutaVala on your tongue.

I found a great on-line book for using essential oils, The complete book of essential oils and aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood:

Subject: treating cold and on treatment strategy by Daniel Penoel, M.D. and Rose-Marie Penoel

My eager to learn class,

I am so anxious to find out what’s in the Natural Home Health Care with Essential Oils by Dr. Pènoël, that I am just scanning it to find the best info to share with you.

When I was a little girl (I only now appreciate it!), when I had a sore throat, my mom (rest her soul) used to mix fresh aloe, honey and lemon – a typical European treatment. It helped my throat, but it still took a while to get well. Now, if you add essential oils to this mixture, rub them on your throat, feet, lymph glands, reflex points, diffuse at night, drink with tea – a victory! You will recover in no time, and above all, painlessly. If you additionally can do Raindrop and Vita Flex – you’ll be on top of the world!

When my husband or son get sick,I always treat them as aggressively and frequently, as they allow me: enema, Raindrop, oil massage, capsules, a drop of oil under the tongue, cleanse liver, kidneys, lymph, etc.

"The onset of infection is frequently seen as metabolic imbalances in the intestinal tract... The cells of the intestines along with healthy intestinal flora, form an excellent first line of defense against invading foreign bacteria.

Disturbances in the equilibrium of this symbiotic system may be caused by diet, emotional stress, antibiotics, drugs in general and by other factors. Any such disturbance in the anaerobic intestinal flora allows the pathogenic flora to increase. As a consequence, detoxification and elimination processes are interrupted and toxins reach the liver. Usually this goes unnoticed, as so-called Kupffer and other cells within the liver neutralize the eliminate such toxins.

When those detoxification functions are taxed or stressed, the overload of toxins are diverted towards mucus membranes and other emergency elimination sites. This discharge through the mucus membranes provides a virtual breeding ground for the proliferation of bacteria, bacterial infection and inflammatory reactions (in the sinuses, bronchi and elsewhere)." Dr. rer.nat. Kurt Schnaubelt "Aromatherapy course"

This is what Penoel shares in his book, which I am going to site in a minute.

Besides this, emotions, diet and mental attitude is a huge help in getting well. Eating bread instead of grapefruit, and other heavy food will not help you get well fast. Your body needs to mobilize all of its strength for a fight and balance.

"I am now cured of migraines after 30 years of having them. I had up to three a week, sometimes lasting several hours. I now have a completely migraine free life and feel like a different person. The cause? In my case it was Gluten intolerance. Once I cut out all gluten the headaches vanished. It took a lot of work to get the diet correct and it is not easy to follow but now I am fit and well. The other improvements in my health have been huge. I’m no longer tired and lethargic all the time, my hair and nails are growing properly. My night blindness vanished! My IBS vanished and I’m back to a healthy weight!" Hev, August 2012

Please read my post on nutrition here.

For a sore throat Daniel Penoel suggests diluting 4 drops of tea tree oil with one tablespoon of honey. “Take an amount about the size of a pea. With a large toothpick or chop stick, then suck on it. Essential oil of Melaleuca alternafiola does not cause irritation and can be mixed directly into the honey.

Important caution: honey does not have the ability to dampen in any way the aggressiveness of the irritating molecules, such as the phenols. If you want to prepare an aromatic honey with an essential oil of thymol thyme, savory, carvacrol oregano, or even eugenol clove, it is absolutely necessary to first dilute the essential oils with some vegetable oil. Organic hazelnut oil is particularly pleasant for this purpose, or even organic sesame oil. 2 to 4 drops of essential oils should be mixed in 10 ml of the chosen vegetable oils. When these aggressive oils are diluted, the diluted mixture can then be mixed into the organic honey.”

In the same book I read a comment about doctors offering antibiotics for inflammation. He compares it to cows giving milk, and doctors – prescribing drugs (what they were taught). Pretty funny and accurate.

Stay well!

I wish I knew French, so I could read his other books (and sing and speak the language).

Bon Jour!

Dr Daniel Penoel and Aromatic medicine

Essential Oils with Dr Daniel Penoel

By: Noel Cunnington

In November and December 2005, Dr Daniel Pénoël, visited Perth, Melbourne and Sydney for a series of workshops on "Aromatic medicine". I was fortunate enough to attend his Sydney seminar, along with 150 other aromatherapists, health care professionals, and keen essential oil users. His 2 and a half day seminar was an amazing introduction to the French school of aromatherapy. In this bulletin, I want to share with you some of the highlights from Dr. Pénoël's seminar.

It was fascinating to hear Dr Penoel's strategy for fighting an infection using essential oils. He begins with a mix of oils where the "stronger" oils are in higher concentration. The "stronger" oils are those with higher percentages of phenols (such as Oregano). These phenols are very aggressive against many infections (viral and bacterial). However, because of the potential irritation that the phenols can pose to the stomach and intestines, after a week's use, Dr. Pénoël then "ramps down" the proportion of oils containing phenols, and increases the proportion of other less-irritating oils.

He explained that he may start with a mix of 70% Oregano and 30% Melaleuca alternifolia (Tea Tree oil), and after a week move to 30% Oregano and 70% Melaleuca alternifolia (and continue on this mix for another couple of weeks). In his use of essential oils internally, Dr. Pénoël always includes a vegetable oil along with the essential oil in a gel cap, because the vegetable oil helps to transport the essential oil into the intestinal tract.

Another example given by Dr Penoel was how he works with tonsillitis, using the molecule Terpinen-4-ol, which is present at about 40% concentration in Melaleuca alternifolia. Dr. Pénoël demonstrated how he puts a tiny bit of high-quality, unadulterated Tea Tree oil on his hand (on a point between the thumb and 2nd finger on top of hand, which is a special acupuncture point), and then he licks the oil off.

"I now have millions of billions of molecules of terpenen-4-ol which have been blended in my saliva. I bring my saliva back to my tonsils......[and I have] changed the breeding ground of the medium which exists in my throat at this infectious stage. You have changed the pH of your saliva." He went on to explain that this makes the saliva more acidic, which inhibits the growth of the infection.

Dr. Pénoël then described how he will swallow the Tea tree oil at this point, so that it will reach his stomach, small and large intestine to become an "aromatic healing saliva". He stated that in addition to this indirect action, the Tea tree oil also has a direct action because "the terpenen-4-ol in the Tea Tree oil also attacks the bacteria itself. It penetrates through the cell wall and membrane, into the cell wall, and destroys the bacteria."

One of the most interesting things I learned from Dr Penoel's seminar was about frequency of application. He shared that when one of his patients is fighting an infection, he instructs them to take a smaller amount of essential oil more often, so that the molecules are consistently in their blood stream. For example, in a simple case of tonsillitis he instructs his patients to lick the Tea Tree oil from their hand every minute for 5 minutes, then every 5 minutes for 15 minutes.

Peppermint Essential Oil

Dr. Pénoël was discussing important oils for a first aid (emergency) kit, when he said: "The #1 problem we face in our daily life in emergencies is pain. We want to find a molecule which is endowed with the capacity to stop the pain, instantly. One molecule which can achieve this is menthol (contained in Peppermint essential oil).....So in your emergency kit, use Mentha piperita (Peppermint).

But don't use peppermint on a large area of the body. It's OK to use on a small area of the body. It must be used neat, exactly as it's been extracted from the plant. Use just a few drops neat, and the pain will go away almost immediately. This is because peppermint has a cooling action, so it blocks/inhibits the pain transmitters....[After applying Peppermint oil], you will suddenly feel the cold more. This means that although the outside temperature may be warm, your body feels as though it's had ice placed on it (so it has a similar effect to putting ice on pain)."

Natural Home Health Care with Essential Oils by Dr. Pènoël

Dr. Pènoël is a native French man and as a Medical Doctor, he uses essential oils in the treatment of his patients. He advises his patients to take essential oils internally, against all the advise of the English school of aromatherapy. The results speak for themselves. In this marvelous volume, Dr. Pènoël demonstrates just how you can use Essential oils as a drug free alternative for health. What distinguishes the oils that Dr. Pènoël uses is that they are therapeutic grade essential oils and the majority are organically grown.

Dr. Pènoël spent sometime with his wife Rose-Marie, in a medical practice in Adelaide, South Australia. Here he met Abby who had been suffering from chronically blocked sinuses for many years. As these things go, Abby was due for an operation, the final resort, to alleviate the problem when she met Dr. Pènoël.

Given just two weeks to turn Abby's condition around, Dr Penoel launched on an intensive aromatic care program. This involved essential oils, of course, but demanded the dedication and co-operation of his patient, Abby and her parents.

Needless to say Abby was much improved and the surgery was cancelled. The book has photographs of Abby and reproductions of her X-rays before and after her treatment with Dr. Pènoël. You can judge for yourself the effectiveness of his protocol.

Dr. Pènoël goes on to give recipes and protocols for some common ailments. Since all circumstances are unique, we suggest using common sense when integrating any new health system and especially essential oils.

For anyone seeking a drug free alternative to mainstream medicine, this book is an excellent place to start. At times the English is a little stilted but this does not detract from the wealth of information it contains.

Dear Ann,

These emails tell all. Gary always said that the quickest way to the lungs

is through the rectum, and it’s instantaneously absorbed.

Here you go.

We use rectal implants for Betsy's asthma or bronchitis. When her chest is

tight we use V-6, or almond oil in a shot glass, about ½ carrier oil and the

YLEO oils we plan to use and insert it with an ear syringe. We have used

this as many as three times in one day. She will go to bed and watch a

movie, put on her oxygen and within 30 seconds of inserting the implant she

has relief. This has kept her out of the hospital more than once.

Agape, Esther

************************

When I went to the Young Living Clinic last November, they prescribed

rectal implants for my husband and me. For mine they used the formula in the

EODR for Pneumonia and Emphysema on page 339. My husband used 10 drops

Frankincense, 10 drops Ledum and

1 tablespoon Protec. We used those implants nightly for months. They said

the implants did better than any other way to use the oils. We both are much

better.

Loesha LaMonica

***********************

A good friend and Young Living Distributor who is also a massage therapist

shared with me the simplest way to do a rectal implant, which she has

suggested to many chronically ill patients with good results. Use a

children's liquid medicine dispenser, often used for liquid antibiotics. It

actually looks like a mini turkey baster but has a rubber tip that goes over

the bottom as well, and can be removed at the time of the implant. It has

markings on the side of the clear plastic that show you quantity in ¼

teaspoon intervals. Put ¼ teaspoon of olive oil or the new YL massage oil

base, add 10 drops of the desired essential oil and top off with another ¼

teaspoon of oil. There is a rubber cap on the bottom of the dispenser and a

rubber squeeze bulb on the top.

Replace the top rubber part after putting in the oils and you are ready to

use for an implant. Just remove the bottom rubber tip, insert about 1 inch

into the rectum and squeeze the top bulb gently. These "medicine dispensers"

are available in most pharmacies for less than $2 in the children's section

with the children's thermometers. Hope this is of help to all those who are

interested. Just an added note. I have been told by many that this is the

fastest way to get the oils to the lungs for help with asthma or bronchitis,

or any other lung condition.

Hello Ann and YLEOiler Friends,

That's great he's seeing a doctor -a friend of our was recently diagnosed

with colon cancer and the only symptom appears to have been a cough.

That said, colon cleansing helps a lot with lungs etc. so that would be my

first suggestion (as outlined in the book 'Inner Transformation'.

This is a hard sell so failing that, I'd go for 4-6 oz of NingXia Red,

spread out in at least 2 doses over the day.

My two cents!
