Science and Application

solThe more I learn about Young Living products the more I understand how and why they work like nothing else I’ve used in the past.

You can find explanation of how essential oils work in full detail on pages from the Essential Oils Desk Reference attached below.

I will only attempt to do a summary below.

Essential oils penetrate cell membranes and diffuse throughout the blood and tissue because of their lipid-soluble structure similar to the makeup of our cell membranes. When topically applied to the feet or elsewhere, they travel throughout the body in a matter of minutes.

  1. The ability of some essential oils, like clove, to decrease the thickness of the blood can also enhance circulation and immune function.

  2. Research indicates that when essential oils are diffused, they can increase atmospheric oxygen and provide negative ions, breaking down potentially harmful chemicals and rendering them nontoxic, inhibiting bacterial growth.

Some oils, like cedarwood and frankincense, can increase levels of oxygen in the brain by up to 28%.

  1. In the human body, essential oils stimulate the secretion of antibodies, neurotransmitters, endorphins, hormones, and enzymes. Examples: prevention and slowing the progression of cancer, promoting the hair growth, increase the rate of wound healing. They increase the uptake of oxygen.

  2. Natural chelators, binding with heavy metals and petrochemicals and ferrying them out of the body

  3. 300 essential oils are distilled or extracted with several thousand chemical constituents. 98% used in the perfume and cosmetic industry, while only 2% for therapeutic and medicinal applications

  4. Because essential oils are composed of hundred of different chemicals, they can exert many different effects on the body.

  5. Importantly, because of their complexity, essential oils do not disturb the body’s natural balance or homeostasis: if one constituent exerts too strong an effect, another constituent may block or counteract it. Synthetic chemicals, in contrast, usually have only one action and often disrupt the body’s homeostasis.

  6. The standards for quality, safety, reliability, and performance by which the oils can be validated, set by American and international agencies, AFNOR and ISO are minimal and not certified. “These standards do not address the hundreds of minor and trace components of natural oil that are necessary to its therapeutic properties.” They have standards for only a fraction of the vast number of essential oils. In the absence of these standards, Young Living has created its own standards based on the true medicinal effects of the essential oil in actual therapeutic applications.

  7. For the past 12 years, Young Living has compiled an essential oil reference library that has over 280,000 compound references. YL developed its own standards to guarantee the highest possible therapeutic value for oils.

  8. Young’s labs are the only ones in the world that are matched and calibrated to the instruments used at the National Center for Scientific Research in France.

  9. As a rule, if two or more marker compounds in an essential oil fall outside the prescribed percentages, the oil does not meet YL standards.

Adulteration is such a major concern that each essential oil YL offers is tested initially by independent European analytical labs, and every subsequent batch is tested by YL highly trained research and quality control scientists.

  1. Today much of the lavender oil sold in America is hybrid called lavandin, grown and distilled in China, Russia, France, and Tasmania. It is brought into France and cut with synthetic linalyl acetate to improve the fragrance. Then propylene glycol, DEP, or DOP (solvents that have no smell and increase the volume) are added, and it is sold in the United States as lavender oil.

  2. Cheap Frankincense is cheaply distilled with gum resins, alcohol, or other solvents, leaving the essential oil laden with harmful chemicals. Sadly, when these cut, synthetic, and adulterated oils cause rashes, burns, or other irritaions, people wonder why they do not get the benefit and conclude that essential oils do not have much value.

  3. There are huge chemical companies on the east coast of the US that specialize in creating synthetic chemicals that mimic every common essential oil. For every kilogram of pure essential oil that is produced, it is estimated that there are between 10 and 100 kilograms of synthetic oil created.

  4. Synthetic oils can produce unwanted side effects or toxicities. Isolated compounds may be harmful; however, pure essential oils, in most cases, are not.

Powerful Influence of Aromas

The fragrance of an essential oil can directly affect everything from your emotional state to your lifespan.

When stimulated by odor molecules, the lining of nerve cells inside the nose

· triggers electrical impulses to vertebrate forebrain involved in the perception of odors

· Which then transmits the impulses to the sensation of taste, emotional memories, and other parts of the limbic system of the brain.

· Because the limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance, essential oils can have profound physiological and psychological effects.

May be used to reduce appetite and produce significant reductions in weight because of their ability to stimulate a section of the brain that governs our feeling of fullness following meals. In a large clinical study (3,000 people) Alan Hirsch, MD, used fragrances, including peppermint, to trigger significant weight losses. In six months, the average weight loss exceeded 30 pounds.

In another study of libido and sexual arousal, 31 male volunteers were subjected to the aromas of 30 different essential oils. The most sexual excitement was produced by a combination of lavender and pumpkin fragrances.
