Rodney District Council ( in Orewa ) have 4 mountain / road type bikes for staff to use for either meetings or pleasure which can be booked through our intranet system instead of booking a car.

We are looking at getting a couple of utility style bikes in the next financial year, something a little more comfortable and user friendly.

We are currently completing our new office building which will have bike facilities for the company bikes and also for the safe storage of staff owned bikes.

We are also currently looking at an emergency ride home programme for any staff who cycle to work, and then need to get home in a hurry.

Responses from Candidates in the 2007 Local Government Elections to a questionnaire on utility cycling.

Peter Cimino Cole ( Mahurangi )

As a result of your inspirational email, I am now determined to create a comprehensive section covering utility cycling in the Mahurangi Magazine. It is totally in sync with the magazine’s objects and with my long-held views—how we can persist in placing cyclists, children in particular, in harms way amongst motorised traffic would be spectacularly difficult to explain to your average alien to Planet Earth!

Thank you again——your contribution is an absolute ray of sunshine in an otherwise very murky afternoon!

Kind regards

Peter

Hello Alan,

I support all forms of outdoor sport and activity including cycling. I would support anything that will encourage people to walk or cycle every where. Rodney is a lifestyle-haven and I am sure that a new council would want to encourage more cycleways, walkways, Bush tracks, etc etc. So, no problem from me with your ideas. If I should get the mayoral job I will certainly be pleased to discuss your ideas with you.

Kindest regards

Brian Neeson

This is an admirable aim. The area that I am standing in is rural only. It has 50% of roads unsealed. The sealed roads are narrow with deep ditches therefore very unsafe for the cyclists that we do see who are recreational on weekends only but they seriously take their life in their hands. Footpaths? what are they!

I wish you well in your endeavors

Would you actively pursue policies that would enable utility cycling to develop along the lines that have made it the transportation mode of choice for so many in Copenhagen?

Would you lobby to rescind the law that compels cyclists to wear helmets in order to make it discretionary on the rider (as it is wherever utility cycling is well-established ) ?

No

Would you give preference to a comprehensive network of cycle lanes over retaining the right to curbside parking?

No

Would you lobby to rescind the law which prohibits cyclists from using pavements (at least as an interim measure for the years it will otherwise take to establish real separation from motorized vehicles)to enable 'slow cyclists'(e.g.the elderly)to take up utility cycling?

Yes

-Before you answer this question, next time you're out driving, take note of how few pedestrians are actually using our pavements and keep in mind that there are places in the world where cyclists and pedestrians co-exist harmoniously in significantly greater numbers.

'Leaving it to the market to decide' is not working as virtually none of New Zealand's bicycle importers or retailers are taking the initiative to either promote or make available the types of bicycles and technologies which would make utility cycling practicable by a much broader range of people(e.g. the elderly ) or practical (e.g. for carrying children or shopping).

Good idea (on the flat!)

To ensure that fleets of utility bicycles become established throughout New Zealand's urban areas, would you promote or support a campaign that will create awareness of utility cycling technologies among the public to help to stimulate consumer demand ?

e.g. actively lobby for the acquisition of a fleet of utility bicycles for council staff to get around town on.

Would you lobby for the installation of bicycle racks on ALL public transport vehicles ?

We dont have any ptv's

Do you cycle yourself? - And if not at this stage in your life, what would it take to get you to take up 'utility' cycling in the future ?

Yes I am a keen cyclist and did the Otago Rail trail this year

Would you recommend that other people (children/ the elderly) cycle?

Yes

I support the Rideshare club, a safe system of casual car parking so that the 80% of empty car seats are filled, especially at peak times. The same end would be achieved as "utility cycling" if walkers were given a lift by drivers to close destinations (and knew when they left home that a lift was almost certain.)

(PS I used to cycle 10 miles to work and back in London doing my OE 30 years ago)
