Christchurch 2021 for City Council Riccarton/Wigram Ward

The group I’m standing for (Christchurch 2021) yesterday released our transport policy which included the following:

Support existing cycle strategy and network plan

The existing cycle strategy is a combination of cycle lanes and off road paths. It is important that network is completed with good cycle access through intersections. A 2021 Council would reprioritise the transport budget to enable faster completion of the cycle network. It is currently half-finished, and with the current spend of under $1M per year will take 20 years to complete.

Many in our CityCouncil team are members of cycling lobby groups or members of Sustainable Otautahi Christchurch (I’m a member) so we are very much interested in making our city more sustainable and cycles are a crucial part of that. We certainly need politicians who are willing to be bolder in their decision making.

I currently bus to work. I don’t cycle because I simply don’t feel safe cycling in Christchurch. I hope that can change in the next few years.

In law helmets are compulsory, in practice discretionary – as there is little to no enforcement. I wouldn’t want to see any move to change that until cycling was much safer than it is now.

I am very keen to actively pursue policies that enable more much higher levels of cycling in Christchurch as a mode of transport. Our 2021 policy does priorities cycle and bus lanes over curbside parking in certain parts of the city.

With kind regards,

Tony Milne
