Alex Dobie.

Kia Ora Alan,

Thanks for the email,

Yes I agree that by climbing on a bicycle a person becomes more efficient at moving than any other creature or machine. The Issue is how do you convince that average JAFFA or indeed the average NZer to climb on a bike. My Views and opinion on bicycling were formed many years ago, as a then member of the values party I meet and befriended a gentleman called Peter MacDonald. Peter was at that time the Friends of the Earth’s spokesperson on Cycling in New Zealand. In 1978 Peter wrote a book entitled “Changing Gear - Why And How to Promote Cycling in New Zealand” A book I have and still refer to when discussions and then decisions in Council occur about developing facilities that promote cycling are being discussed.

As a two term serving councillor seeking a third term I have always endeavoured to promote cycling. Regards Alex
