Songs from

“24 JAZZ ETUDES

FOR TROMBONE AND BARITONE HORN”

by Jack Gale

(Musicians Publications Inc., 1987)

The tunes in this book are simply incredible. They are challenging, but the effort to learn them is worth it! Most are based on famous jazz tunes- click on the name of the original song to hear a performance of it. Each solo shown here is listed as a graded solo by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA).

Alternate slide positions are used extensively!!! If you'd like to see a list of the ones used for a specific tune, there are two ways. You can either click on the photo of the piece and then click on the word YOUTUBE on the bottom. This will open the video in Youtube, and you can then open the description. Most include the list as well as some pointers. If you'd rather just ask, email us at thetromboneplace@gmail.com and we'll be glad to send them to you.

Etude in

A-FLAT MAJOR

based on SOPHISTICATED LADY by Duke Ellington. (Watch how relaxed Duke is here!)

ETUDE IN

C MAJOR

based on TAKE THE A TRAIN by Duke Ellington. (This is a cool version by the great pianist Oscar Peterson)

ETUDE IN D MINOR

based on BERNIE'S TUNE by Bernie Miller. (This is a live performance featuring trombonists Mark Nightingale, Eijiro Nakagawa, and James Morrison.)

etude in g minor

based on IT DON'T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN'T GOT THAT SWING by Duke Ellington. (There are many recordings by Duke, but we're sharing something different here. This is the incredible Stan Getz Quintet with Stan on tenor sax, Bob Brookmeyer- valve trombone, John Williams-piano, Teddy Kotick-bass, and Frank Isola-drums.)

Etude in F minor

based on LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME by Walter Donaldson and Gus Kahn. (This version is with the amazing Nina Simone. Her solo shows off her classical piano training!!!)
