Freygish Scales

The FREYGISH SCALE is a full octave scale. It is commonly found in Indian, Middle Eastern, Eastern European, Central Asian, and Flamenco music, and is often used in Hebrew prayers and klezmer music. (Hava Nagila can be played using only the notes in this scale.)

If we write the scale by adjusting the Major Scale, we simply lower the 2nd, 6th, and 7th notes one-half step each. If any of those notes is sharp, we’ll make it natural. If any of those notes is natural, we’ll make it flat. If any of those notes is flat, we won’t use that scale for our purposes- we’ll use an enharmonic sharp scale instead. (So we’ll include the G# scale instead of the Ab scale to avoid double flats.)

This short video explains how the Freygish scale is created by adjusting the major scale.
