Key Square

The Key Square Finder tool will search for possible keywords where only a partial key square is known. As well as being able to search for the standard 5x5 and 6x6 key squares an option to search for a 9x3 key square is provided. This is used in Digraphid ciphers where the row field is used for the longer side of the grid irrespective of which key grid is being used.

On the Home tab select the language from the Keyword drop down menu.

On the Word Search tab click Key Square. The selected language will appear in the window title.

Enter common rows - Enter groups of letters found in the same row of the key square into the common rows field using a comma or space as the separator.

Enter common columns - Enter the groups of letters found in the same column of the key square using a comma or space as the separator.

Grid Size - Select the grid size used

  • 5x5 – A-Z with I/J combined.

  • 6x6 – A-Z and 0-9.

  • 9x3 – A-Z, 0-9 and # as used in the Digraphid and Tridigital ciphers.

Enter the search term using ? or - to replace single letters. This must be between 1 and 5 characters. Entering a single ? will list the frequency of single letters as a percentage for the given language.

Press return or enter.

The n-grams in the data files matching the search term will be displayed.
