Welcome to Donna and Linda's 2018-19 3rd Grade ICT Class!

July 2018

Dear Families,

We're looking forward to seeing everyone in September and an exciting and engaging year together! Many faces will be familiar from hellos and handshakes in the hall. We are anxious to hear stories about everyone’s summer adventures near and far! Here is how we’ve been spending our summer.

Donna: I have been spending time backpacking and canoeing in the Adirondacks. I became an Adirondack 46er on July 1st atop Grace Peak having summited all 46 High Peaks in the Adirondack Park. I’ve also spent some time exploring trails and paddling waters outside of New York. In between, I’ve been catching up on reading and enjoying long naps.

Linda: This will be my 5th year as a 3rd grade teacher at the Earth School. Donna and I will be teaming again as co-teachers this coming year. This summer I am enjoying time with my family. We are spread across the East Coast and Midwest so time together is precious. Since shortly after school ended I have been in Ohio with two of my children and their families. What a treat! In early August, our entire family is heading south to North Carolina for two crazy, wonderful weeks at the beach.

We’ll be in regular contact with you throughout the school year to let you know what’s happening in the classroom. Here are some ways you can get ready over the summer:

Look at maps: Our Core study will focus on native lands and native people across the globe. The children will be reading and writing about different cultures and biomes, learning to research information independently, and creating projects connected to our studies. If you travel anywhere outside of the city this summer, please look at a map with your kids and show them where you’re going. Whether or not you travel, taking the time to look at a map of the world will give your kids a great way to start thinking about this topic and they usually find maps very interesting.

Collect special items: In September, we will write about things we did and places we visited this summer. Please have your children collect photos, ticket stubs, and other special items that remind them of their summer activities. On the first day of school, make sure your children brings in one or two of these souvenirs. During our first two weeks together they will show them to their classmates, talk about their summer memories, and use them to generate ideas for their writing.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and we look forward to seeing you in September!

Sincerely,

.Donna and Linda
