The next morning, our hotel informed us that a minivan would drive by the front of the hotel taking people in the direction of Yazikou (the entrance to Shennongjia) and she helped us flag one down.

When we got close to Yazikou, the driver asked us something we couldn't quite understand, regarding where we wanted to be dropped off. We were in front of a big tourist welcome center looking building with a sign for tickets, so we had him drop us off there, even though we knew we were still about 1km from Yazikou, the entrance.

It's low season, so we were the only ones on the bus. Strangely, they asked to see our passports before boarding the bus and they recorded our info and thumbprint.

The bus took us to the highest point, some interesting rock formations, and a miniature zoo with some caged monkeys. At the miniature zoo, we decided to go off on our own for a bit and found a footpath along the stream and up a small mountain.

The most peculiar species founded in the forest zone are certainly the "white animals". The first albino animal spotted in the scenic area was a white bear, which looks like a giant panda in white skin. White monkeys, white roes, white deer, white squirrels, white snakes, white crows and even white toads have also been gradually discovered by scientists. Aside from the endangered animals, Shennongjia is a natural garden for herbal medicines as well. More than two thousand kinds of precious herbs, such as Jiaogulan (gynostemma pentaphyllum, which is as efficient as ginseng), actinidia, muskiness, fritillaria, Chinese angelica and etc., can be easily found in the Shennongjia Forest Zone.

The Wild Man of Shennongjia is a mysterious figure as famous as Nessie and UFOs. The records of the Wild Man appear many times in ancient Chinese books, and since the 1970s, many people have declared that they had spotted The Wild Man. They are described to be ape-like, about two meters (6 ft.) high, covered by red or brown hair and can move very fast while standing erect. There have been many research studies held, which have yielded some evidence of the creature, such as the footprints and hair of The Wild Man. It is believed by many people that The Wild Man is an ancient species just like the giant panda and the golden haired monkey. Recently, some hikers and visitors also announced their sightings of The Wild Man. But to this day, no Wild Man has yet been caught.

Because of its marvelous natural scenery, rare foliages, endangered animals and famous legends such as the mysterious "Wild Man" (Chinese Yeti) said to be found in the mountains, the forest zone has attracted many tourists every year, amongst them researchers and scientists.

Shennongjia was named after a very famous Chinese chief in prehistoric time, Shennong, also known as Yandi. He was believed to be one of the two ancestors of Chinese people (the other was Huangdi ). He invented crockery, discovered herbal medicine by personally tasting herbs and taught his people how to cultivate. It is said that while Shennong tasted herbs here, he suffered from poisoning more than seventy times! However in the end, he managed to discover many useful herbal medicines. To commemorate his great work, he became the namesake for the land we speak of today, Shennongjia.

Shennongding Peak, the highest mountain of the scenic area, is 3105.4 meters (about 10,188 feet) high, above sea level. The lowest point, Shizhu River in southeastern Shennongjia Forest Zone, is only 398 meters (about 1,306 feet) high, above sea level. Visitors can enjoy witnessing the different beauties of the four seasons at different altitudes. Flowers blossom out at every corner; firs, spruces, dove trees, and many rare trees can be seen everywhere. Virgin forests, clear streams and grand waterfalls in the thousands of canyons beckon visitors to indulge in the wild nature. Peculiar caves also often amaze visitors. There is the Swallow Cave that inhabited thousands of swallows, the Tide Cave that floods three times a day, the Icy Cave that is always icy in summers, the Fish Cave that inhabited lots of fish at times of thunder and much more. Wild animals, some of which are really rare species, are also frequently seen (i.e. the golden haired monkey, giant salamander, spotted deer and etc.).

Without a doubt, the Shennongjia Forest Zone is an attraction teeming with virgin scenery and folk legends, awaiting the enjoyment and excitement of casual tourists and researchers alike.

Enshi Grand Canyon

travel to Yichang

How to Get There:

There are three central towns in the area: Muyu, Hongping and Songbai. You can take a coach at Yichang City to Muyu, or take a coach at Shiyan City to Songbai. As the forest zone is very large, it will be a good choice to rent a car. It is easy to get lost in the mountains, so don't leave the road too far away! The living conditions and services in Muyu Town are the best in the whole zone, so it's better for visitors to spend nights here.

Recommended Accommodation:

Muyu Town: Shennong Shanzhuang (2 stars); Tianlu Hotel

Songbai Town: Shennongjia Hotel

Tips:

Virgin forests in the Zone are not totally open to visitors because of their large size, so you'd better find a guide; You will probably want to pack your raincoat and some plastic bags so that you can keep your clothes and camera dry; a knife, match and compass are also highly recommended; It's usually very cold in the night, so you'd better pack more clothes; wear boots and trousers in the forest so that you can prevent bites from mosquitoes and other insects.

Proceed with the dream-like Shennongjia tour. Hire a car to visit The Shennong Altar (CNY 20), which is in memory of the Chinese's ancestor, Shennongshi. Then visit the Source of France Stream. Get back to the guesthouse in Muyu Town. At night, you can also take a taxi to join in the campfire party by the Shennong Stream.

Hubei Province, bordering Shaanxi, boasts a significant history and splendid culture. Here we would like to recommend a tour to Wudang Mountain Scenic Zone and Shennongjia Natural Reserve for you to appreciate the charm of Shaanxi's neighbor.

Tentative Plan for my April Trip

Mon: April 6 Depart

Tues: April 7 Arrive 8:05pm

Train or plane:

Many travellers arrive in Lúshān from either Nánchāng or Jiǔjiāng. Regular buses leave for Nánchāng (Y40, 1½ hours, approximately every 40 minutes, first/last bus 7am/5.30pm) from the bus station (828 1983) just north of the Xiadu Hotel on Hexi Lu. Buses also depart from here for Wǔhàn (Y75, 8am). Buses to Jiǔjiāng (Y8, one hour, first/last bus 7.50am/3.30pm) depart regularly from the small ticket office on Guling Jie. In summer, it may be a good idea to book your return seat upon arrival, particularly for day-trippers.

From Jiǔjiāng, buses leave regularly from 8am for Lúshān from the long-distance bus station (chángtú qìchē zhàn) on Xunyang Lu, which is also connected to Nánchāng (Y36, two hours, every 25 minutes), Jǐngdézhèn (Y35, two hours, every hour), Wùyuán (Y65, three hours, 9.45am), Shànghǎi (Y199, 10 hours), Nánjīng (Y130, six hours, frequent) and Wǔhàn (Y71, 3½ hours).

Lúshān’s myriad footpaths make explorations on foot outstanding, although consider hiring a taxi to visit sights and walking back. Lúshān has copious cable cars and tramways (Y50 to Y60 return).

        • Alternatively, you can take a taxi from your hotel to Qingshan Bus Station in Nanchang, where you can take a direct bus from Nanchang City to Mt. Lushan. It takes about 2.5 hours and costs CNY55 per person. You will make a short stop at the South Gate of the scenic area to buy the ticket and then continue to the mountain.

        • The entrance fee for the Mt. Lushan is CNY 180 from April to November, and CNY135 from December to March. The ticket is valid as long as you do not leave the scenic area. Lushan Mountain has many attractions, so you are advised to stay on the mountain for one or two nights. TCG recommends the Taiji Hotel (11# Lu Lin Road, Guling Town). • Flower Road: It is located to the Qinhupan in northwest Guling Street.

        • Xiufeng Mountain: It is located to the south of Mt. Lushan, in Xingzi County beside Boyang Lake.

        • Day Five: Lushan - Nanchang - Hong Kong

        • After your exploration of Mt. Lushan, get back to Nanchang City (you'd better book the return tickets when you first arrive in Jiujiang City or Mt. Lushan). Then catch the flight back to Hong Kong. The flight departs at 12:45 on Tuesdays and Fridays from Nanchang airport.

NanChang Airport then take airport bus to JiuJiang bus station where you can take a bus to LuShan. RMB:15

The Wusong appears nearly every day during the very cold winter months, mid-January to mid-February are the best times to see it. You will need to get up early to appreciate the full beauty of it. Between 7am – 10am is best as before 7am it is dark and after 10am the sun melts a lot of the ice. Walk east along the river for the best views.

Jiangnan Gongyuan (江南公园)

Jiangnan Gonyuan is located south of the river behind Century Square. An ice carving festival is held there during the Spring Festival week, but it is much smaller than that of Harbin. The entrance fee is 3RMB.

Beishan Park (北山公园)

Beishan Gongyuan can be reached by taking the number 42 bus.

The entrance fee is 5RMB.

NOTE: The temperatures in January when I was there were between a high of -15°C and a low of -26°C. Warm clothes are essential. - See more at: http://community.travelchinaguide.com/review2.asp?i=903#sthash.dZtKpNCW.dpuf

Morning train to ChangChun or bus to Yanji

China Train Timetable from changchun to yanji

Day 1: Take bus No.10 from the railway station to the Puppet Emperor's Palace & Exhibition Hall and go back in time to China of the 1930s and 1940s. In the afternoon, take a bus to the People's Square and visit the Banruo Temple. If you start your Jilin tour on Monday or Tuesday, you will have to spend the afternoon in the Changchun Film Studio, for the temple stays closed on these two days. Stay in a Changchun Hotel.

Day 2: You can spend the next day enjoying yourself at the Jingyuetan Ski Resort (take a mini bus from the People's Square or a taxi). If you prefer, you may even stay here overnight, otherwise head back to Changchun. If you come in winter you may wish to spend longer here, since one days skiing may leave you unfulfilled (and since the Heavenly Lake in Changbaishan may not be worth a visit in the deep midwinter).

Day 3: Take a long-distance bus (see Changchun Transport for details) at 9am and arrive in Jilin City about half an hour later. Have a good lunch at one of the local restaurants near the bus station. In the afternoon, take bus No.3 to the Confucius Temple. Stay in a Jilin City Hotel.

Day 4: In the morning, take bus No.3 from the railway station to go to the Meteorite Museum and take a look at the allegedly largest extant meteorite on earth. In the afternoon, take bus No.7 from the railway station and get down at the terminus--Beishan Park.

Day 5: In the morning take a bus from the People's square that goes to Songhua Lake Area. Since this place is too large to cover within half a day and there are virtually no restaurants around, you are advised to bring along some solid food. In winter, it is also an ideal place to practice skiing. If you prefer, you may stay at the resort for the night and have a good time the next day.

(The rest of the tour is really for those visiting in summer or autumn, since Changbaishan in the winter is a cold and inhospitable place. You should always check out the weather report before you go and bring along a supply of food from Jilin City).

Day 6: Take a bus from the long-distance bus station (see Jilin City Transport for details) at 9am and you can expect to arrive at Changbaishan in 7 hours. Check in at a hotel on the mountain slope or, if you are on a budget, try one at the foot.

Day 7: Get up early in the morning and head directly to The Heavenly Lake (Tianchi). After having a brief lunch, you may head to the different scenic spots scattered around the lake, including the Changbai Waterfall, the Hotsprings and the "Below Gound" Forests. For sport fans, there is the Changbaishan Plateau Winter Sport Training Area, but for this you will have to stay at your hotel for one more night.

Day 8: Take the first bus (see Changbaishan Transport for details) that leaves the mountain at about 7am to Antu, from where you may catch train No.556 for Beijing at about 11:50am.

The tour was with one of the numerous generic tour companies that keep opening and closing in Changchun. The cost was 380rmb with an extra 120rmb to stay in a double room with a private show and toilet. The itinerary on day 1 was to catch the bus at 5:40am for a 6-7 hour bus trip and eventually arrive at a small town near the west gate of Changbaishan called Songjianghe in the evening. Day two was an early wake up then off to Changbaishan for half a day. The rest of the day was a shopping stop and a drive back to Changchun.

easiest way to get to Changbaishan is by booking one of the three-day tours arranged through CITS in Jilin (at the Dongguan Hotel) costing ¥620 (¥420 for Chinese), which include all fees and accommodations, and which stop at all the major sightseeing spots, including Tian Chi.

How to Get There:

Erdaobaihe County is the nearest county to Changbai Mountain. There are trains to Tonghua, Changchun, Dandong, etc. and coaches to Yanji, Shenyang, Changchun, Jilin City, and Antu. The nearest airport is in Yanji, with flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang, Dalian and Changchun. In Erdaobaihe County, visitors have to rent an automobile in order to reach the Northern Slope and Western Slope Entrances, but remember that not every car is allowed to go inside the mountain.

Trains: Trains to Baishan City are mostly from neighbouring cities and towns, such as Tonghua, Shenyang, Baihe, Ji’an, Dandong, Longjing, Dalian and Dunhua. Visitors can take a train to Tonghua, Shenyang or Dalian and then take a train to Baishan.

Enter Changbai Mountain from the Southern Slope Entrance; visitors have to go to Changbai Korean Autonomous County in Baishan City first. Visitors can rent an automobile to arrive the Heavenly Lake directly. Driving along the Yalu River, visitors have to drive on DPRK's land at some time.

Accommodation

Having stayed at Erdaobaihe, I would advise travellers to stop at Baihe (白河). It is a larger town and probably has much better accommodation options. Of course, travel to and from Changbaishan might be slightly more expensive as it is further away than Erdaobaihe. - See more at: http://community.travelchinaguide.com/review2.asp?i=876#sthash.Sanhbtsf.dpuf

Getting There -- The route begins at Erdao Bai He (Bai He for short), a small town 25km (16 miles) north of the mountain, named for a river that flows down from Tian Chi. The best way to reach Bai He from the north or west is through Yanji; during peak season, which starts around mid-June, a tourist express leaves Yanji's long-distance bus station at 5:30am and goes directly to the mountain gate. The 3-hour trip costs ¥55 one-way; ¥110 same-day round-trip including lunch. Or you can catch one of several Bai He-bound buses (191km/118 miles; 4 hr.; ¥32) that leave from the Yanji railway station. From the south, the easiest approach is by train via Tonghua (two daily; 5 1/2 hr.; ¥103), Jilin (one daily; 16 hr. 40 min.; ¥125) or Shenyang (one daily; 13 1/2 hr.; ¥103).

Admission at the main gate costs ¥100 for adults and ¥50 for students and children. Tour bus (¥68) at daozhankou takes you around the park and to a parking lot in front of the hot springs just below Tian Chi.

Tours -- Many travel agents in Jilin offer a 3-day Changbai Shan tour for ¥500 to ¥650. The tours are certainly reasonably priced but they don't leave much time to enjoy anything but the lake. InYanji, CITS, Jixi Jie 4, south of the intersection with Xin Gongyuan Lu (tel. 0433/272-0022) offers a 1-day tour for ¥300, which includes lunch and all fees for the mountain during weekends. Note: It's extremely difficult to beat the CITS price if you are a solo traveler and want to return to Yanji the same day.

Yanji Airport is 220km away from town. It takes 4 hours by bus with RMB40.

Baihe Train Station is located in town. Train from Changchun, Shenyang, Tonghua arrives at this station.

Antu Train Station is 150km away from town. It takes 3 hours by bus with RMB25. Train from Changchun, Haerbin, Beijing,Dalian,Shenyang to Tu-men stops at this station.

Bus Terminal is located in town. Bus from Antu, Yanji, Changchun, Tonghua arrives at this station.

Our address in local know as 'Chang Qu Er You' (场区二幼). Taxi from Bai He Train Station or Bus terminal cost CNY10.00 and drive about 5 minuts to the hostel.

Good place and close to the train station. Walk straight out onto the main road, turn right and it's 200-300m down on the right. Rooms are a bit cold and damp unfortunately but the electric blanket helps a bit with this. Communal area is pleasant. About a 20min walk to the downtown area and local parks. Cheap place to stay considering Changbaishan is pretty damn expensive.

Seeing the Lake

To view the lake, you will have to climb an incredible number of paved stairs (¥25). More enjoyable is the 2-hour hike, which follows a smaller road up a narrow valley, crosses a bridge, then climbs past the 68m (223-ft.) Changbai Shan waterfall to the north shore (bei po) of the lake. Rock slides sometimes block the trail, in which case you may be able to seek out a freelance guide (¥100 per person) to show you an alternate route. Go early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Once you arrive, search out Mr. Song, an ex-reporter and photographer who lives by the lake and likes to tell tales of the mythical Tian Chi monster (guaiwu)over harsh glasses of Chinese moonshine.

Other Sights

Changbai Shan is home to a number of volcanic hot springs, the largest of which seeps steaming out of the rock south of the waterfall. Water from the springs commonly reaches 80°C (180°F); vendors sell eggs boiled in the springs (¥10 for four). The Wenquan Yu, in a small white building that's a 10-minute walk below the waterfall (on the left side as you descend), charges ¥80 for a pleasant soak in its hot-spring baths. Also on the mountain, 4km (2 1/2 miles) below the daozhankou, is the truly magical Dixia Senlin (Underground Forest) (includes the Heavenly Pool [Xiao Tian Chi]), a lush forest that becomes progressively more alien as it descends, with the Erdao Bai He 60m (200 ft.) below the mountain stratum (bring bug spray). In Bai He itself, between the railway station and the rest of town, is Meiren Song Senlin (Sylvan Pine Forest; 6am-6pm; ¥8), with a stunning forestry of sylvan pines (meiren song), a rare species that grow only on the northern slope of Changbai Shan between 650m and 1,600m (2,100-5,200 ft.).

Where to Stay & Dine

Rooms in most hotels are outfitted with kang -- heated brick platform beds, favored by Koreans and Manchus, either raised or sunk into the floor and covered with quilts. A group of families have set up small guesthouses next to the railway station in Bai He, where it is possible to sleep on a kang and enjoy home cooking for as little as ¥50.

If you prefer a mattress, Bai He's largest and nicest hotel is the Xinda Binguan (tel. 0433/572-0111; fax 0433/572-0555; 116 units), on the east side of Baishan Dajie just south of the Meiren Song Senlin. Simple but spacious and clean rooms with slightly dirty bathrooms cost ¥380. The Fubai Binguan (tel. 0433/571-8372; www.cbstianchi.com/fb-about.asp; 68 units), inside the Bai He Forestry Bureau complex south of the railway station, has clean guest rooms with small but tidy bathrooms for ¥220 to ¥220, as well as beds for ¥50.

If you plan to spend more than a day at Changbai Shan, it makes sense to pay the extra money and stay on the mountain. The Athlete's Village, at the daozhankou (Yundongyuan Cun; tel. 0433/574-6008; fax 0433/574-6055; 59 units), offers basic but comfortable rooms with TVs and small, clean bathrooms in a ski-lodge setting for ¥560. A 15-minute walk up the road, in a large, traditional Korean-style building, is the Chang Bai Shan International Hotel (Chang Bai Shan Guoji Binguan; tel. 0433/574-6004; fax 0433/574-6002; 42 units), which offers relatively luxurious standard rooms with plush beds and clean marble bathrooms (¥700; AE, DC, MC, V). Next door, the impeccable Chang Bai Shan Daewoo (Chang Bai Shan Dayu Fandian; tel. 0433/574-6011; fax 0433/574-6012; 59 units) offers a choice of bed or water-heated kang (¥960; AE, DC, MC, V).

All of the hotels mentioned above serve overpriced but adequate food. Restaurants in town are mostly dives, but they are significantly cheaper and serve comparable fare. The best meal (also the most expensive) can be found at the Chang Bai Shan Daewoo.

The Western Approach

This route has been more developed over the last couple of years and has a more subtle beauty. The starting point is the dusty village of Songjiang He, 40km (25 miles) west of Changbai Shan, connected by a newly paved road to a saddle of rock overlooking Tian Chi on the border with North Korea. The chief attractions here are the Jinjiang Grand Canyon, the plant life, which changes gradually from ghostly forests of birch at the lower elevations to vivid fields of wildflowers and grassy tundra just below the lake, and the newly open ski park. The flowers at the Alpine Garden and Iris Garden are at their most vibrant in early June. This path also offers a wonderful panorama of the Changbai Shan mountain range.

Essentials

Getting There -- Since the Changbai Shan Airport, 18km (11 miles) from the western slope entrance, started operating in 2008, the mountain has become increasingly more accessible. The 40-minute flights connecting to Changchun (daily except Wed) cost ¥580 one-way; daily flights to Beijing take 1 hr. 40 min. and cost ¥980. There is also a daily flight from Yanji. Discount is available. Book tickets with China Southern Airline (tel. 8620/95539; www.cs-air.com), Hainan Airlines (tel. 8620/950718; http://hnair.travelsky.com), or Air China (tel. 4008/986999; www.airchina.com.cn).

Another way to get to Songjiang He is by bus from Changchun (5:30am; 9 hr.; ¥42) or Jilin (1pm; 14 hr.; ¥116); or by train from Tonghua (6:30am; 5 hr.; ¥12 hard seat). The long-distance bus station, in a blue speckled building with a red-tile roof, is a 20-minute walk south of the railway station on Zhan Qian Jie, the city's main thoroughfare. Taxi is the only way to go to the entrance of the mountain from the railway or long-distance bus station. It takes about 30 minute and costs ¥50.

Tours -- The Songjiang He Forestry Company (tel. 0439/631-8461), with a travel office inside the Songjiang He Binguan, is the only organization officially allowed to run tours of the western slope. The 2-day tour costs ¥440 and includes admission and lunch, but no English is spoken. If you can speak Mandarin, it's much cheaper to hire a private car; drivers will approach you at the railway station. A reasonable price range is ¥150 to ¥250.

Exploring the Mountain

The Xi Po Shan Men (West Slope Mountain Gate), located 44km (27 miles) west of Tian Chi, is open from 6:30am to 4:30pm; admission is ¥100. Tour buses (¥68 per person) travel from the gate to the different sights below Tian Chi. To go to Jinjiang Canyon, a 1km-deep valley formed from molten lava, change buses at the transportation service center. One of the best times to visit the mountain is mid-July, when the birch forests and fields of wildflowers flourish. The tour bus drive ends at a steep set of stairs that leads to Tian Chi and the No. 5 border stone, which marks the beginning of North Korea. Birds and Chinese tourists cross the border at will, but soldiers stationed by the stone keep foreigners from doing the same. There is a 3-hour round-trip hike from here to Baiyun Feng, the highest point (2,691m/8,826 ft.); it's the second peak to the left as you face the lake.

Hiking West to North

Development of the western approach has made it possible to hike around Tian Chi and see both sides of the lake in 2 days, provided you have a tent, warm clothes, and plenty of food and water. The hike from the west shore along the ridge past Baiyun Feng to the waterfall on the north shore takes roughly 6 hours. Once you reach the waterfall, you can hike down to the hot spring, camp, and catch a ride to Bai He the next morning. Buses back to Songjiang He (3 hr.; ¥13) leave from the long-distance bus station on Baishan Dajie at 2pm.

Warning: The path is rocky and the weather unpredictable -- for experienced hikers only.

Where to Stay & Dine

The best lodging in the western slope area is the well-equipped resort hotel, Days Hotel Landscape Resort (Changbai Shan Lanjing Daisi Jiudian; tel. 0439/633-7999; fax 0439/633-7888; www.ljdsh.cn; 112 units), adjacent the western slope gate. The environment-friendly log resort uses solar power to heat the water and provides spacious and soothing rooms (¥620-¥840). It also has a handful of rooms with kangs. Bathrooms have shower only but are spotless. Outside the resort, is an 800-m (2,625 ft.) wooden trail into the forest where you can enjoy a pleasant walk after breakfast. In Songjiang He, the dark Songjiang He Binguan (tel. 0439/631-3601; fax 0439/631-8820; 90 units), on Gongyi Dajie, across the Senlin Huodong Zhongxin is the only proper hotel. Partially refurbished rooms with acceptable bathrooms cost ¥240, but this can be bargained below ¥200 even in the high season. The hotel serves tasty Chinese food.

      • Beijing/ Tai'an

      • In the first day, please get to the Beijing South Railway Station to catch an afternoon high-speed train to Tai'an. There are many trains running between these two cities, so you can purchase the tickets upon your arrival. If you want to book the hotels and tours in Beijing, please refer to the tour B-102C for the itinerary arrangements in Beijing.

      • You will arrive in Tai'an after 2 hours. From the railway station, you need to find the way to your hotel. TCG suggest you to live in the Celebrity Taishan Hotel (former Taishan Overseas Chinese Hotel). Take a bus No.18 for 13 stops to the Taishan Railway Station, and change to bus No. 4, 15 or 36 for 3 stops to Shangheqiao, and then go forward along the road to the hotel. Or you can also take a taxi from the Tai'an High-speed Rail Station to your hotel, and the fare is about CNY 30 per cab.

      • Accommodation Suggestion: Celebrity Taishan Hotel

        • Day 02Tai'an

        • This morning, we suggest that you get up early and go for a hiking tour to Mount Tai, one of China's top five mountains. The breakfast is provided in the hotel and you need to take some food and water with you. From your hotel, walk across the street and go eastward along the road for about 240 meters, turn left and go for about 60 meters to Daimiao stop to catch a bus No. 3. Alight at Tianwaicun after 9 stops. You can also take a taxi from your hotel to Tianwaicun with an approximate cost of CNY 10 per cab.

        • There are two routes to climb the mountain: hike from the Red Gate (the main entrance) to Halfway Gate to Heaven (at least two hours), and climb (at least two hours) or take a cable car (about 20 minutes) to the top of the mountain; the other route is to take the tourist bus from Tianwaicun to Halfway Gate to Heaven (about 30 minutes) and then get to mountain top. As the best sceneries of Mount Tai are on the section between Halfway Gate to Heaven and the top, we suggest you take a tourist bus (CNY 30 per person for one way) to the Halfway Gate to Heaven and then climb to the top.

        • When getting down from the mountain, you can take the bus No.3 to Daimiao to visit the Dai Temple. Located at the southern foot of Mount Tai, the temple is the largest and most completed group of ancient buildings in Mt. Tai. It is a Taoist temple and has been the place where emperors held worship ceremonies. Then walk back to your hotel.

        • Day 03Tai'an - Qufu

        • After breakfast, check out of the hotel and take a taxi to the Tai'an High-speed Rail Station to catch a morning high-speed train to Qufu. You will arrive at Qufu East Railway Station in 20 minutes, and then you need to find a hotel to leave your luggage. We suggest you the 4-star Queli Hotel, near the Confucius Temple and Kong Family Mansion. From the railway Station, you can take the bus No.K01 to South Gate of Confucius Temple and walk to the suggested hotel. Since it may be early for check-in, you can leave your luggage at the front desk and go out for a visit.

        • Qufu is known as the hometown of Confucius - a great philosopher and educator from the Spring and Autumn Periods (770 - 476 BC), so there are many attractions about Confucius. The Kong Family Mansion and Confucius Temple are within walking distance from your hotel, and the Cemetery of Confucius is only two kilometers away, so you can gain much knowledge about this Chinese saint in the remainder of the day.

        • Accommodation Suggestion: Queli Hotel
