Tour around Paris

Spend your first day walking around Paris.

    • Start at the Champs-Élysées and see the Arc de Triomphe. There isn’t a long line, and you’ll get sweeping views of the city.

    • Walk down the Champs-Élysées through the Jardin des Tuilleries. Stop and admire the Louvre before continuing down Rue Rivoli and crossing into the original part of the city.

    • Visit Notre Dame, an amazing Gothic church. Get there early to avoid the lines to the Bell Tower. Visit the underground Roman ruins and the Saint-Chapelle Church. Personally, I think this church is far more beautiful than Notre Dame, and the stained glass windows are some of my favorites in the world.

    • Head south toward the Latin Quarter. The area is pretty touristy, but if you get off the main drag, you’ll find yourself in a labyrinth of alleys and café-lined squares that are far away from the local tourist hangouts. Plus, it’s a good way to get lost in a beautiful part of Paris and just explore.

    • Visit the Pantheon before heading west toward the Jardin du Luxembourg, where you can relax and watch life go by. There’s great people-watching here.

    • After that, head north to see Saint Sulplice. If you’re into The Da Vinci Code, you’ll be looking for symbols and hidden meanings throughout this church. If symbols don’t interest you, just marvel at how grandiose it is.

By this time, it should be late in the afternoon. It’s a perfect time to stop in a café, order some wine, and relax the Parisian way.

The easiest way to get to the Eiffel Tower from Charles de Gaulle airport is to hire a taxi, which will take around 30 to 45 minutes to drop you off at the base of the Tower and shouldn’t cost more than €50. However this is a pricey option, so alternatively you can take the RER rail line to the nearest station, which is Champs de Mars Tour Eiffel. Walk to Terminal 1 or 2 and catch the RER B line in the direction of Paris city centre, disembarking at Saint-Michel-Notre-Dame. From here you must change on to the RER C line in the direction of Versailles Rive Gauche, getting off at Champs de Mars Tour Eiffel, which is roughly a 10 minute walk from the Tower. The total journey time is around 1 hour, and costs €9,10 per adult.

We took the night train from Paris, Austerlitz (it leaves at 10ish) changed at St Gervais Les Bains and then direct to Chamonix (just another hour). We liked it because we didn't ruin a whole day by traveling (even with the TGV it really wrecks the day). All you need are an eyeshade, earplugs (provided if you are in 1st class), and an Ambien pill to help you sleep (in my case). The return train is equally nice leaving Chamonix around 9 PM and arriving in Paris at 6:30 am.

The main TGV lines (fast train) from Paris :

    • Paris - Annecy.

    • Paris - Lyon.

    • Paris - Bellegarde.

    • Paris - Chambéry - Aix Les Bains.

These stations have onward connections to Saint Gervais Les Bains Le Fayet (which is serviced by TGV during some periods of the year).

Tip: If you have trouble on the SNCF site finding a train, it may be because there are too many train changes. Instead of using "Chamonix" as your destination, try using "St. Gervais Les Bains Le Fayet." From wherever you come in France, you will almost always have to change trains at St. Gervais Les Bains Le Fayet (which is about 15 minutes down the valley from Chamonix after Les Houches).
