2018-19 Curling season starts

Post date: Oct 7, 2018 11:46:59 AM

We have been busy preparing the curling shed for the new season. Gilles Leblanc along with Fred Albert, Bob Cameron and John Coutts have painted the walls above the sideboards. Our iceman Allan Jones aided by Serges Berubé prepared the ice and then they along with Gilles Leblanc, Art Woods and John Coutts painted the ice and laid down the lines etc. Of course we have installed new rubber mats at both ends of the ice which should help to keep the ice much cleaner this year. Thanks to our volunteers for getting our season off to a good start.

The new season starts on Tuesday October 9 with our new curler and refresher clinic being run by Meredith Royds and is immediately followed by the HOT SHOTS opening event. In a new wrinkle the Hardy Rocks will face-off against the evening curlers to determine a club champion.

Note! The club will be using the 5 Rock Rule for the free guard zone this year. It has been used by the pros for a couple of years and is now being adopted by most clubs and in all competitions. Previously no opponent's guard could be taken out until four rocks had been played. In other words the second of the team without the hammer could take out an opponent's  guard with his/her first rock. Now no opponent's guard can be taken out until 5 rocks have been played. No opponent's guard can be taken out until the second of the team with the hammer throws their first rock. A team is allowed to take out their own guard at any time. I wonder how long it will take us to remember this !

Good Curling!
