Student voice and societies

Welcome from the Language Societies

Our societies are made up of language students who volunteer in a variety of roles, such as charity, social, academic, and sports. We hold various events throughout the year for students to get involved with, such as our annual summer ball, Christmas meal, and regular charity and social events. Whilst we work closely with the School, we run externally to the University and provide a student-run support network to all students.

Our societies aim to provide a welcoming, accessible, and inclusive environment for all students. We want to ensure that students are given a wide range of opportunities to ensure their university experience is a positive one. We encourage everyone to get involved with the society as it gives you the chance to meet some amazing people and take part in some great events.

The language societies are always here to support students with anything they may need. We look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our societies.

We run lots of events both academic and casual to suit all our members, ranging from Pause Cafés (social speaking events where you can have the opportunity to interact with fluent French speakers) to Cheese Wine Evenings (simply come along and gorge yourself on cheese all night!) Please follow our socials for more information about our upcoming events! Feel free to give us a shout if you have any questions or suggestions, and if you don't have Facebook you can also contact us at cercle.francais@sheffield.ac.uk.

Society membership is £5 for one year, and £13 for a four-year lifetime membership. We hope to see you soon!

Nederlandse Vereniging

Welcome to NV, the Dutch society at the University of Sheffield!

Email: nederlands@sheffield.ac.uk

Looking for a small, friendly society, a place to explore Dutch (and Belgian) culture, and meet other language students? Then NV is the perfect place for you! Wat gezellig! We welcome absolutely everyone here, whether you’re a dutch speaker, a student studying dutch, or just interested in the culture.

We have huge plans for this small society this year, with socials ranging from the iconic Sinterklaas social in December, to Koningsdag in April, and plenty of fun other socials around the year. Currently in the works are a regular Pub and Praten social, karaoke, knitting with Yeti and Filip, and even a Dutch play! There’s something for everyone here in NV.

Moreover, we’ll be around through freshers week and through the year to make sure you’re settling in alright, and will be a good place to come if you need a hand with your Dutch. We’ll make sure you’re kept up to date with our word van de week, social plans, and fun dutch resources through our social media and regular newsletter!

All this and more for just £5!

Lusophone Society

https://www.facebook.com/lusosoc19/

Olá / Hello!

Welcome to the Portuguese and Lusophone Society!

We are dedicated to all Portuguese-speaking countries, so if you are interested in these in any way, join us. We aim to:

- Create a community of students who study Portuguese within the School of Languages and Cultures;

- Celebrate the culture of Portuguese Speaking Communities Worldwide through events and socials relating to the heritage of these countries;

- Forge links between native Portuguese speakers studying in Sheffield and non-native speakers (or those who wish to learn) through linguistic events, and integrate both groups into one community, to encourage speaking Portuguese on Campus;

- Work with related societies who have common aims and objectives, to diversify the involvement of the societies in Portuguese and Lusophone events and socials.

We will have weekly casual 'conversas no café' in various different places, which give you a chance to meet new people.

Expect many other online events, and we will bring back our BBQs, meals in Portuguese restaurants/cafés, and bar crawls!

Our society costs £4 to join!

We look forward to see you!
