Whether you start a language as an absolute beginner or are continuing your study of a language after A-Level or a similar qualification, you will join a language pathway that matches your level of proficiency and your ambition. You will be taught by specialist language tutors offering a mix of speaking and listening exercises, reading comprehension tasks and written work on a week-to-week basis.

Most languages have the same number of contact hours per week and you can expect a similar assessment no matter what particular language or combination of languages you select. We teach as much as possible in the target language. You will hear more about the structure of our courses and any language-specific information at the scheduled language-specific meetings in WELCOME Week and also at the start of teaching in week 1.

Our Languages and Cultures

MDL121

Our core module for all students

This course covers the essentials for a First Year Languages and Cultures student. At each stage, we'll take you straight to the key information, showing you how to make the transition to studying at university level.

We start with essential information on settling in to your School - the support we offer, your personal tutor, and where to get help.

Then we'll then cover key questions such as how to make your language learning efficient; how to present an argument; how to structure an essay; how to use academic journals; how assessments work ... plus bringing in specialists from the Library, our Study Skills Centre and the Careers Service, all with information tailored specifically for Languages and Cultures students.

This compulsory module is in addition to the 120 credits of modules that you register for in August. It will appear in your online timetable once you have registered.
