Germanic Studies

Herzlich Willkommen

Many congratulations on your successes and your university place!

The staff and present students look forward to meeting you here in Sheffield in September, and to working with you over the next four years. You are invited to join our team!

Germanic Studies is a lively community and we believe that the more we work together, the happier we will be, and the better our results.

We welcome both post A-Level students of German and people who want to start studying German from scratch at Sheffield. We'll introduce you to the culture and history of the German-speaking countries. Our style is informal and approachable, and we support your learning with events outside of the regular teaching hours. And then there is our inimitable Deutscher Verein, of course!

We also work closely together with our Dutch colleagues.  The Germanic languages areas cover a central and important part of Europe and are linguistically and culturally complementary.

For now, have a good look around the information you can find here and if there's anything bothering you, or if you have a question about German email us before you get to Sheffield.

Autumn 2023 will be a special semester!

Welcome from your Student Society Deutscher Verein

Willkommen zu Deutscher Verein Sheffield!

We are the University of Sheffield’s Germany society for students of German, German-speaking students, and anybody else who has an interest in Germanic culture. We have a jam-packed schedule for the coming year so come and join us! My name is Brad Hampshire and I am the DV president. Alisha Mallya is our secretary. We are both 4th years students of German and we have a great team ready to make your time at Sheffield a bit more fun.

For newcomers at the university, we will be organising a welcome event as a ‘Give it a Go’. A great chance to meet people when you arrive in Sheffield.

During the year we have German themed events ranging from bar crawls and movie nights to meals out and our regular Stammtisch. There is also potential for a trip to Germany with Berlin and Cologne being previous destinations. Our socials are inclusive for all, so regardless of your interests, be it culture or socialising, we have something for you!

The society also proudly has two amateur sports teams, SLOG and SLOGIN, host weekly football and netball training for all abilities and with no judgement, nur Spaß!

DV is well and truly a family, and we cannot wait for the next year and to meet you. Follow us on Facebook and make sure you join when you get to Sheffield!
