Super Mario 64 DS Exposed

Introduction

I have made many codes for the N64 version of Super Mario 64 but now I've been let loose on the DS remake of Mario's very first 3D adventure. It will be very interesting to compare the N64 and DS SM64 games as they are quite different in some ways and of course, running on hardware old and newer.

Special thanks has to go to YouTube user spyke4995 for donating his Trainer Toolkit for the DS. In addition to the Trainer Toolkit I use an Action Replay for the DS.

Bugs

The N64 version of Super Mario 64 had quite a few glitches and so does the DS version, some of which are specific to SM64 DS.

A silver star too much

If you use a code or edit the memory using the trainer toolkit so that the player has 5 silver stars and then you collect a silver star the number of silver stars doesn't increase. But the silver star remains above the player and strange things happen; you can't pause and all objects other than the player freeze-you can walk through many of the objects. Apparently, this can be done without using a cheat device.

Comparisons with the N64 version

The number of lives couldn't go over 100 in the N64 version (due to the game's coding rather than a hardware limit) but with SM64 DS they can go up to 127. But above that, if lives is 128 it appears as 08 and 255 shows as 35 lives.

Debug

As with other Nintendo games, SM64 DS has two test maps/rooms that can be accessed using an Action replay code. The first one has a number of Tox boxes and the other has many objects such as items boxes, the caps and Goombas. There is also various ramps and steps and some water; there is some Japanese text on some parts of the floor and numbers on the slopes which probably indicate how steep they are.
