Sunset

Southern Pacific Transportation Company begin publishing Sunset in 1898 as promotional magazine. It merged with Pacific Monthly of Oregon in 1912. The Lane Publishing Company was founded in 1928 by Laurence W. Lane, who purchased Sunset, and in 1929 begin publishing the magazine in a new format. Lane Publishing and the Lane Magazine and Book Company moved from San Francisco to Menlo Park in 1951. The company was run by brothers Laurence William (Bill) Lane, Jr and Melvin B. Lane after their father died in 1967. Laurence Sr.'s widow, Ruth Bell Lane, was also instrumental in various periods in the company's management.

The company was renamed Sunset Publishing Corporation after it's acquisition by Time-Warner in 1990. In 2001 Time-Warner reorganized Sunset to be part of Southern Progress Corporation.
