News update - Police Legacy Ride
Post date: Apr 28, 2015 1:5:19 AM
As the final few days countdown ticks by the project team will try and communicate & answer any lingering questions the team may have.
TRAVEL TO START: Please note the following key change.
The bus to Corryong is planned to leave from the Police Academy in Mt Waverly at 10am Thursday morning.
This has changed from the plan to leave from the VPC/WTC.
The reason(s) for this is are
· coming into the city and getting Parking to load bikes /luggage & people would be difficult.
· parking at the Academy will be easier and more secure.
ACTION: If this causes an issue for anyone who has made arrangements to leave from the VPC/WTC please
contact us ASAP so we can discuss alternatives
A trailer to take the teams luggage will also be at the Academy, plus the bike specific trailer (26 bike capacity)
and other support vehicles will also be present
ACTION: The team is requested to be at the Academy by 9:30am to allow adequate time to
Park, secure bikes and luggage on trailers before departure
(Details of where to park etc. to follow in the next day or two)
After loading the vehicle convoy will depart from the a Academy with a schedule as follows
· Craigieburn OSTT approx. 11am. arrival time, traffic dependant.
(if you arrive at the car park and find it is secured , please wait for bus to arrive)
· Benalla to pick up additional riders & bikes
· Arrive Corryong, approx. 4pm, get settled, hold a short team briefing etc. and have dinner.
Friday – Sunday WE RIDE!!
CANBERRA CEREMONY & DEPARTURE
Arrangements have been made for a short (approx. 20min) ceremony at the National Police Memorial at 2pm
Sunday 3rd May. Following this the team will travel to the YMCA Bush Camp Lodge in Canberra. The YMCA
Is providing this facility including providing showers, towels, soap, shampoo/conditioner for the team to
freshen up before departure back to Melbourne . There will also be tea and coffee there too.
We would like to leave Canberra for Melbourne between. 4pm – 5pm
RETURN TO MELBOURNE:
Will be a reversal of the route above including an additional stop in Albury Wodonga
(either bus/trailer and/ or support vehicles) for some riders.
Estimated travel to Melbourne dependant on breaks will put the teams arrival
Appox. 11-12pm Sunday night
UNIFORM:
We will be bring remaining kit we have and do any swaps / changes in Corryong on Thursday night
Please note we have had some issues with the quality control of the Kit which became apparent when unwrapped
(e.g. padding stitched in wrong way around – unless you have a very unusual body shape!)
This has affected our ability to provide some of the larger Knick sizes we thought we had covered.
Riders are requested & advised to have a couple of pairs of Knicks packed both to cover this
and as it is a multi-day event.
TOILET STOPS
Our scouting party (Boris Buick) advises that there are plenty of towns along the way. Just in case anyone
Is apprehensive we have also sourced a toilet/change tent which will be in one of the support vehicles
Travelling with us and can be put up as necessary.
WEATHER
Long range (rapidly getting short range) forecast for Tumbarumba (halfway point between Corryong & Tumut on first day)
Is included below.
LUGGAGE / PACKING
Start making sure you’ve got your helmet, ride cleats, water bottles etc. packed and don’t leave them in the house somewhere
( - Believe me I’ve seen it happen!!)
As with any long ride we are likely to encounter a variety of conditions and you should be prepared. Support vehicles
Will be available to carry a small bag for riders that they can call on e.g. rain develops, to put on / take off items
But the aim is to be as self-sufficient as possible.
Please also ensure you have adequate warm clothes for post ride – but don’t bring the entire wardrobe as it is
Highly unlikely you’ll need that ball gown or tux!
SUPPPORT CREW
Special thanks to our support crew who will be coming along and covering a wide range of activities required
to make the event a success:
- Escort car front (flashing amber light & "Cyclist Event Following" signage)
- Escort car rear (flashing amber light & "Cyclist Event Ahead" signage)
- Assist with luggage pack into trailer and move trailer to next destination
- Bike trailer on standby if team had to be removed from road ( e.g torrential rain. This is Australia after all!)
- Photography/video capture to use for raising awareness post event and next year
- Organising lunches and road/water stops / changes of gear (clothes that is!) if needed by cyclists
- Directions and assistance as required e.g. SAG wagon for rider pickup if unable to continue
Looking to source
· If anyone has a mains plugin electric pump for air bed/mattresses we’d like to hear from you on the chance
Of borrowing it. This means that we don’t have to outlay and have more residual to donate to Police Legacy
on the team behalf.
Of course as always if you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us directly
Regards
