About Key Map Skill Levels

Our key maps instruction and sheet music are based on five skill levels labeled A through E, with Level A for beginners and level E requiring the most advanced level of skill. There is no specific level of skill specified for each level. Rather, these levels are designed so that very easy pieces are in Level A and the ones requiring the highest level of skill are in Level E. The other three levels simply try to capture as evenly as possible the gradual progression of skill required to go from Level A to Level E. No scientific accuracy is claimed for the definitions of these levels. They are simply practical means of helping students and teachers select the most appropriate pieces, with regard to the present abilities of the student pianist.
