Newton's First Law: Law of Inertia

Cliff Notes

I. Inertia

A. Inertia: what makes an object resist a change in motion

B. More mass = more inertia

C. Examples

1. Football player blockers are bigger (have more mass-->more inertia) because they don't want to move

Wide receivers are smaller (less mass-->less inertia) because they need to move quickly

2. Cars are smaller than buses (have less mass-->less inertia), so they can turn more quickly

3. Long boards are harder to maneuver than short boards (have more mass-->more inertia), so it's harder

to turn them

II. Newton's First Law: Law of Inertia

A. Objects in a state of rest, or in a state of motion at constant speed in a straight line, will continue in that

state unless a force acts on it
