Preparation Events

Both of these events are to completed at your middle school prior to the date of the olympics. The completed projects should be brought on the day of the olympics for judging. The full event description can be downloaded from the documents page.

Zip Line Slide (Engineering)

4 participants, one submission per school

Astronauts get bored without gravity in outer space. They have newly constructed a play area with simulated gravity. You have been hired by few astronauts to create a trolley to slide on their outer-space zip line! However, this isn’t an ordinary zip-line! Instead of the line sloping downwards and allowing gravity to do all the work, this line also goes upwards. Use your knowledge about gravity, momentum and potential energy to create the best trolley!

Objective: To design and create a trolley (the rail mechanism on a zip line), that will hang onto the rope and advance the farthest along the rope.

Deep Space Exploration (Pictorial Essay)

4 participants, one submission per school

Currently, human explorations into deep space have been considered impossible by many because of factors such as radiation, food and oxygen supply, and the distance that is required to be travelled. Your task, if you choose to accept, is to create a new method of travelling through space that will be quick and efficient, while protecting humans from mitigating external factors.

Objective: Create a pictorial essay consisting of a visual representation and a written analysis that creatively communicates your idea.
