Hessle Railway Workers

NIneteenth Century Railway Workers

This page contains a list (as recorded in the census returns) of all those men living in Hessle who were working on the railway. Some of the names may have been working on the railway in the chalk quarry. The presence of a name does not mean that he worked on the railway at Hessle. Some entries may not be entirely accurate due to transcription errors: John Bradley (1871) is a good example as he is listed as being an engine driver at the age of 16. Clearly he could not have been driving railway engines on the NER at such a tender age as it took around twenty years to achieve such a position.

The outstanding name on the list is that of George Hoyle, Station Master, who appears in every year but the last.
