Khattai

Khattai is dried green mango pieces. It makes delicious chutney or can be used in the place of tamarind or lemon/lime juice to add acidity to dishes like dhal or fish curry.

I've only just been able to find khattai in Adelaide - imported from India and labelled amchur. However, if you go to an Indian shop and ask for amchur, you will more likely than not be given powdered mango; and if you ask for khattai, don't be surprised if you're shown some cookies. Growing up in Fiji, khattai only ever meant dried green mangoes.

To use khattai, rinse well and soak in hot water to rehydrate.
