Message Display
A wedding gift -- desktop screens that show messages from each other, or from friends and family
The Story Behind the Project
One of my best friends got married! I thought it would be fun to make him and his wife a wedding gift, and this is what I came up with -- two nearly identical boxes, one for him and one for her, each with the ability to display messages on the screen, sent from a website accessible by scanning the QR code displayed when you press the QR code button. I figured they can use it either to send each other notes while away from each other during the day, or to give the website link to friends and family, and keep the boxes around the house. I also added an easter egg to show their engagement photo if they hold down the QR button :).
This project had several firsts for me! First time using a color LCD, first time designing my own physical enclosure on my own, and first time experimenting with making my own buttons. All-in-all, I'm very happy with how it turned out.
Features
Buttons built in to the front face let you change the color of the text, background, and show the QR Code / engagement photo
I'm pretty proud of the button design. It's your standard 6mm push button, but mounted directly behind the front panel against a solid backing so that pressing the cut out wood bends just enough to press the button, providing a very pretty, flush, and satisfyingly tactile button.
