Lists of British World War One Tanks

by name

Tank Names

The first tank crews named their vehicles, in July 1917 the names were officially adopted and each tank was given a new name beginning with the battalion's letter.

Even after the battalion designation was changed from letters to numbers in January 1918 the tanks continued to carry names beginning with their battalion's former letter; even in those battalions that used crew designations beginning with the company's letter.

Tanks retained their name until they were knocked out, transferred out of the battalion or were transferred between companies. Names were often retained and used on the tanks successor, sometimes with a post nominal to indicate how many times the name had been used.

The Germans and Russians also named their tanks.

Some vehicles thus carried several names throughout their existence.

If a tank's serial number is known please refer to that entry for the tanks history.
