All DataViz Should Be Beautiful & Accurate In The Future
My whole career I have a thing about graphs in reports, papers, etc. I am annoyed at how they look most of the time. Most reports are made with the thought there should be a graph, figure, or table to break the text. The graph is just put in the report, and no one cares how they look. Not even if they are accurate. I am on a mission to change that. All DataViz should be beautiful and accurate in the future.
Learning DataViz
In the blog 'Not an artist anyway' I talk about how I can't draw but want to make beautiful infographics and graphs. The only way to do this is to learn to draw with the technics available in the information age. I followed a few eCourses with De Betekenaar to learn to sketch. This helped me over the fear of thinking I can't draw. After these courses I was certain that I could sketch and started sketching my graphs, the outline of stories and WordPress websites. A bit later I went to a workshop Communicating with infographics for professionals working in the communication brand. This workshop was an eye opener, because there are a lot of tools, which could help me further on my mission to make beautiful DataViz.
How I am Finding A Balance Between DataViz & Text
A visual is the way to attract people to the information I want to share, but with a visual I can't tell the whole story. I need a DataViz and text to tell the whole story. DataViz is all that is visual. A picture can also be a DataViz. Without meaning to guide the reader through the story the DataViz can be interpreted wrongly. A legend, title and a description are a minimum in text needed. To complete storytelling on paper there must be also text like in books, blogs, and reports. Text and DataViz should be in balance!
