Self-improvement, goal setting, and personal effectiveness are essential to human flourishing. Recent advances in cognitive science, technology, AI, and machine learning offer unprecedented opportunities to support these noble pursuits. Scientific research has yet to catch up to this new frontier. The Max Planck Research Group for Rationality Enhancement strives to change that and establish a solid scientific foundation for developing technologies, tools, and strategies for helping people improve themselves, achieve their goals, and become the persons they want to be. To achieve this, we are hiring scientists and developers at all levels (student assistant, intern, researcher, Ph.D., student, or postdoc) for a number of projects on goal setting, productivity, and self-improvement. Our projects range from psychological research on practically important fundamental questions about goal setting, goal pursuit, and metacognitive learning, to technical work on machine learning and AI methods for improving human learning and decision-making, and applied research on developing and evaluating online tools, strategies, and apps for goal setting, self-improvement, and productivity.
