911 Information

911 Call

When you dial 911 and the Dispatcher answers the phone you will be asked for the address of the emergency.  This address is key in getting help to you as quick as possible.  When giving the Dispatcher the address it is also important to provide them with the town, city or village in which the emergecy is occuring.  Once the Dispatcher has the address, they will ask you for your name and contact number in the event they become disconnected.  The Dispatcher will also ask you a series of questions to determine what type of emergency you are reporting.  This questioning will provide the Dispatcher with the needed information to get the appropriate help to you.  If you need to call 911 it is extremely important you remain calm and answer all of the questions the Dispatcher asks.  Do not hang-up with the Dispatcher until you are told to do so.

Can Your Home Be Found

You have called 911 for an emergency, can the responders find your home?  It is important to make sure your address is visible from the road.  If you are placing your address on a mailbox or post near the road make sure it can be seen from both directions when driving up or down the road.  Reflective signs are the best way to post your address and can be easily seen by responders if correctly placed.

Accessing the Emergency Scene

Once the emergency scene has been located by responders it is important for you to make sure that the location is accessible to emergency vehicles.  It is important to make sure that your driveway is wide enough for emergency vehicles to access your home.  During the winter months, please make sure that your driveway is kept clear of snow that could hinder emergency responders accessing your property in an emergency.

If you own a property in our district that is not always occupied such as a seasonal home or business with an automatic fire alarm, it is imperative that you have a local key holder that can respond to the property in the event of an alarm or emergency.  Without a key holder, it can be difficult for the fire department to gain access to your property.  In the case of an alarm activation, it will be difficult for Firefighters to determine the nature and cause of the alarm unless there is an obvious sign of a fire from outside the structure.  If the fire department feels the need to investigate an alarm or potential hazard further, it may require Firefighters to force entry to the structure.  So, please help the Firefighters help you and avoid the possibility of unnecessary repairs by having a local key holder.

Fire Hydrants

The village fire hydrants are maintained by the village department of public works.  In the event that you see a problem with a hydrant, please report it to the village at 607-467-2492.  During the winter months it is extremely important to make sure snow is cleared from the hydrants.  Residents are asked to help with this task by removing snow from hydrants that are adjacent to your property.
