HOW TO TURN A VCDS LOG INTO AN EXCEL GRAPH.
This is not written by a computer expert
The following, explains how to turn VCDS log data into excel graphs. This is very handy when looking at logs for temperature, EGR/MAF, injection and Turbocharger. A graph is much easier to interpret than a long list of numbers.
FINDING YOUR VCDS LOG.
Open
My computer
Drive X (what ever your main drive is called)
Program files
VCDS
Logs.
You will find any logs you have made in this “logs” folder.
If you didn’t give them a name, don’t worry. VCDS will have given them a long string name which will include the date.
The logs will be .csv files. If you double click on a log it will open in notebook which is not ideal.
Instead
Right click the log you want and “open with” choose excel.
The log will open in excel.
When you change this data into a graph, the first column is the one you will graph against.
In other words the first column will be the bottom (X) line of your graph.
The other columns will be measured against the side (Y) line of your graph.
This is why it rarely makes sense to log a graph from more than three data columns. (two is ideal).
To graph the excel data.
Highlight all of columns 001-0, 001-1 and 001-2 including the header cells as shown below.
Next
Click the bar graph symbol. (or on the toolbar click “Insert” and then “chart”)
You will now see a list of graph types
Choose “scatter” and the smooth line graph. (In black above)
Choose NEXT
The new pop up will appear.
Click NEXT
Click on the TITLES tab. (That’s the one you can see open above.)
Give the chart a title
Name the X axis
Name the Y axis.
Ignore the AXES tab.
Click on the GRIDLINES tab.
Click each of the four boxes to make a traditional graph paper look.
Click on the LEGEND tab.
Click “bottom”.
Ignore the Data labels tab.
Click FINISH
Your graph will appear as a small graph on your current page.
Click on it to move it, resize it, etc.
E.g.
All done.
For a graph to look sensible you need to resize it so that the gridlines form SQUARES.
When you save the log
Click SAVE AS
Give your log a suitable name
Change the file type to .xls
Save.
