LOCAL AND GLOBAL EVENTS

The Department of Transportation, along with other departments and agencies, works together to commemorate events that promote respect, encourage understanding, strengthen unity, highlight national pride, and develop its personnel in accordance with the Department's core values and competencies.

World Kindness Day

World Kindness Day has been an observance every 13 November since 1998, when the World Kindness Movement declared it such. It was the fruit of a meeting of numerous humanitarian groups in 1997, who finished up their meeting by making an official Declaration of Kindness.

The world has plenty of unkind acts that occur in it, but World Kindness Day is meant to shine the spotlight on the truly kind acts that people do as well. And it is meant to encourage people everywhere to do “random acts of kindness”, as well as more purposeful and commitment-filled acts of kindness, or any acts of kindness at all that you can think of.

Many observe the day by giving food, clothes, money, books, or other needful items to those who need them most. And many just are extra careful to hold the door for strangers, say “thank you”, pay for someone else’s lunch, or a multitude of other small, but kind, acts.

World Mental Health Day

On 10 October, the World Health Organisation (WHO) observes World Mental Health Day. The event is meant to increase public awareness about the importance of mental health, mental health services, and mental health workers worldwide.

There are also efforts to mobilise new mental health initiatives and to discuss how to make mental healthcare more readily available to people in countries where it is rare to nonexistent.

Each World Mental Health Day has its own special theme, which serves to focus efforts on some particular aspect of mental health.

First celebrated in 1993, World Mental Health Day is already a quarter-century old tradition. Many countries will organise their own special events to mark the day, and you may see mental health related programs on national media outlets.

National Indigenous People's Thanksgiving Day

The popular Republic Act enacted by President Fidel V. Ramos in 1997 sparked the first commemoration of National Indigenous People’s Thanksgiving Day. This act recognized and supported the rights of all indigenous peoples in the Philippines, as well as allowing them to control their affairs. Four years later, the Philippines’ new president decided to create a whole day dedicated to acknowledging indigenous peoples and providing them with government support — an act based on the Republic Act. The president proclaimed October 29, 2003, as the National Indigenous People’s Thanksgiving Day and the same day every year thereafter. To further bolster her commitment to ensuring fair treatment for indigenous peoples, the president confirmed another proclamation that designated October as National Indigenous People’s Month. All this goes to show the president’s support for the highlanders.

The indigenous peoples of the Philippines who include the Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and many others have seen marginalization, dispossession, and many other forms of unfair treatment by the Philippines’ government even after the country gained independence in 1946. In simple terms, they have been oppressed by the lowlanders (Filipinos) who see them as uncivilized and not worthy of enjoying the privileges that come with the developing world. Their oppression began from the time many of them dared to oppose the Spanish rule of the 19th century. When the Americans took over control of the country through the early 20th century, these segregational treatments still thrived. However, as has been noted, later in the 20th and early in the 21st centuries, governments have strived to ensure a reasonable level of fair treatment for all the indigenous peoples.

World Environment Day

#BEATPLASTICPOLLUTION

Since 1973, every 5th of June has been designated as World Environment Day by the United Nations. This annual observance aims to raise global awareness regarding pressing environmental issues, including climate change, deforestation, pollution of our oceans, and unsustainable development that poses threats to various plant and animal species.

World Environment Day has gained significant traction since its inception, extending its reach to over 140 countries worldwide. Its main celebratory event takes place on all six inhabited continents of Earth, bringing people together in a collective effort to promote environmental consciousness. These gatherings often feature the rendition of a special anthem called the "Earth Anthem," adding to the sense of unity and purpose.

Themes for World Environment Day vary each year, but they consistently emphasize the importance of Earth as our shared home and the need to protect it, as well as the preservation of its diverse life forms. Other recurring themes address vital issues such as the conservation of water, safeguarding the ozone layer, mitigating the detrimental effects of deforestation, combating wildlife crimes, and ensuring a healthy and beautiful planet for future generations, leaving a positive legacy for our children and grandchildren.

Philippine Eagle Week

Every year, from June 4 to June 10, the Philippine Eagle Week is observed. It is a week dedicated to honoring one of the world's most unique creatures, the Philippine eagle.

The Philippine eagle, a highly elusive species, thrives within the lush jungles of the Philippines. Sporting a striking combination of brown and white plumage and boasting a hairy chest, this magnificent creature measures between 2.82 and 3.35 feet in length, tipping the scales at an impressive weight range of 8.98 to 17.6 pounds. It earned the moniker of the "monkey-eating eagle" due to local accounts from the Samar and Bonga people, who observed its exclusive preference for preying upon monkeys. The origin of its generic name, "Philippine eagle," can be traced back to the Greek words "pithecus" and "phagus," meaning "ape or monkey" and "eater of," respectively. Acknowledging its significance, the distinguished title of "Philippine eagle" was officially bestowed upon this majestic creature through a presidential proclamation in 1978, solidifying its status as a cherished national emblem in 1995.

In light of the Philippine eagle's rarity and endangered status, it is of utmost importance to implement measures aimed at their preservation and to educate the public about these majestic birds, in order to secure their existence for future generations. To address this concern, the Philippine government has taken a decisive stance by prohibiting the killing of Philippine eagles, imposing severe penalties such as 12 years of imprisonment and substantial fines for those who violate this ban. It is imperative for not only the Philippines but also the global community to unite in their efforts to safeguard the Philippine eagle, recognizing its significance as a valuable heritage that should be conserved for generations to come.

National Heritage Month 2023

As the Philippine Constitution emphasizes the conservation, propagation, and popularization of the nation's historical and cultural heritage, Proclamation No. 439, s. 2003 designates the month of May as National Heritage Month annually. Similarly, Republic Act No. 7365 requires the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to protect and promote the nation's cultural and historical heritage. The goal is to raise awareness, respect, and affection for the cultural history of the Philippines, as well as garner support for the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage. It is emphasized how crucial it is to increase public awareness of cultural heritage sites, structures, and landscapes and to encourage their participation in preservation efforts. This includes activities such as performing arts, visual art and fashion exhibitions, culinary events, folk cuisine fairs, design retrospectives and competitions, media and literary events, and tributes to living traditions and intangible heritage. Also acknowledged is the importance of celebrating and fostering the multi-cultural traditions of indigenous people, Muslim communities, and Filipino-Chinese heritage. May, the month of traditional celebrations and people's active participation in heritage preservation, is recognized and highlighted.

World Press Freedom Day

Since it was announced in 1993, a lot of progress has been made toward a free press and freedom of speech around the world. The free flow of information has been made possible by the rise of digital technologies and the rise of independent media in many countries. But there are more and more attacks on freedom of the press, the safety of journalists, and freedom of speech, which impairs other human rights.

Further, there are many problems that the international community has to deal with, such as war and violence, persistent social and economic inequality that drives migration, environmental issues, and problems with people's health and well-being all over the world. At the same time, there is a lot of misinformation and false information online and offline, which damages the structures that support democracy, the rule of law, and human rights.

Press freedom, journalist safety, and access to information all play pivotal roles in combating these dire circumstances and dangers. Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights guarantees everyone the right to freedom of expression, which is essential to and propels the realization of all other human rights. Since press freedom and independent, pluralistic, and diverse media are essential to the exercise of all other human rights, this year's Special 30th anniversary celebration of World Press Freedom Day is a call to recentre these issues as well as celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, assess the state of press freedom throughout the world, defend media from attacks on their independence, and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

2023  National Women's Month Celebration

This mark a juncture in the advancement of women’s rights as it launches a new recurring theme from this year to 2028: WE for gender equality and inclusive society.

WE stands for Women and Everyone emphasizing the role of women themselves and everyone in the pursuit of gender equality. WE also stands for Women’s Empowerment, which can only be achieved when agencies, mechanisms, institutions, private partners, and duty-bearers from the national to the local level provide women equal rights and opportunities, and women take these opportunities to further themselves. With women and everyone in synergy, WE can make gender equality a possibility.

Gender equality is the first half of the GEWE advocacy, and it is the ultimate goal when we advance the rights of women. Thus, the theme bearing this is a call for urgent action to double the efforts toward this absolute aspiration.

Inclusive society. This is a call not only for a gender-responsive society but an inclusive one. A society that overrides differences in SOGIE, class, ability, generation, status, and culture; a society where every individual, each with rights and responsibilities, has an active role to play. Equality and inclusion go hand-in-hand in the GEWE advocacy.

Earth Hour 2023

Earth Hour 2023 will be celebrated through an on-the-ground event, providing a platform to urgently promote the advocacy of addressing the planet's biggest environmental challenges. This event has been known for "Lights Off" - the symbolic event and visual signifier of collective support for action against climate change (taken from WWF- PHILIPPINES).

In this light, all are encouraged to take part in this event and spend 60 minutes doing something positive for the earth.
