Criminal Justice Day at Western Oregon University will be held on Wednesday, March 4. If you are interested in the field of criminal justice (police officer, detective, fish and game warden, security guard, probation officer, forensic science technician, DEA, FBI, CIA or Secret Service agent, crime scene investigator, etc.) this trip to WOU might interest you. The 2020 World Affairs Seminar for youth will be held this year from June 20 to 26 in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The topic this year is world hunger. You are eligible to apply if you will be at least 15 years old and no more than 18 years old on June 20. The Florence Rotary Club will cover your expenses. Scholarships may be available. The annual Rotary Club “4-Way Speech Contest” will be held in April. All students in grades 9 through 12 are eligible to enter. To participate, you will need to write and present a 5 to 7-minute speech on a subject of your choice that applies the Rotary 4-Way Test. Cash prizes are awarded to the winners at the local and district levels. For more details see Ms. Osbon or Mr. Moser in the counseling office, or Mr. Orr in ASPIRE.

February 7th is Job Shadow Day in Florence. We hope all participants have great experiences.

The Education Expo will be held on Saturday, February 29th at Siuslaw High School. This event will showcase many educational opportunities available in the area. Sponsored by the Siuslaw School District, Mapleton schools will also be participating, as will 60 or more other local organizations that offer various forms of education in the community. There will be food, music, prize drawings, and activities for children. The Expo will be open from 10 am to 2 pm. We will need lots of help for this major community event; all time spent will count for volunteer hours.

March Madness college and career week will take place from March 16th to 20th at SHS. You’ll be hearing a lot about this exciting week in the near future.

JUNIORS: If you are a student of color with a strong academic record and significant financial need, you may wish to apply for a Gates Millennial Scholarship. The deadline to apply is very early in the next school year, so you should start exploring this opportunity now and work on your application before the end of this school year.

JUNIORS: If you are planning to apply for scholarships or attend a college or university after graduation, you should consider taking the SAT and ACT this winter or spring. Here are the upcoming test dates:

SAT:

· March 14, 2020 (registration deadline February 14)

· May 2, 2020 (registration deadline April 3)

· June 6, 2020 (registration deadline May 8)

ACT:

· February 8, 2020 (register by January 10)

· April 4, 2020 (register by February 28)

· June 13, 2020 (register by May 8)

· July 18, 2020 (register by June 19)

SOPHOMORES: The Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp will be held this year from June 20 to 25. It is designed for students who are in the 10th grade this year. The camp is held in Dorena, Oregon at Grove Camp. All the costs of camp are covered by Rotary, and transportation can be arranged. Others who have gone to the RYLA camp have had great experiences.
