Yes! It is doable in Wenvoe!!!

The Wenvoe Wildlife Group covers the parish of Wenvoe, on the Western Edge of Cardiff.  In total the community has about 800 dwellings.

The Group joined the Nectar Point Network in December 2013 and the following is an update from the project coordinator Bruce McDonald on their progress up to May 2014

“We have distributed 20 Wall Germander (Teucrium chamaedrys) plants free to residents and members of the wildlife group.

Costings are :

With a £50 Garden Centre voucher given by Keep Wales Tidy we purchased 24 plants from Style Garden Centre, Wenvoe. This was at a discounted price. 18 of these were potted up in attractive 7 inch pots (they will be fine in these for a year) purchased for 59p each at Buyology in Barry funded by wildlife group funds. Soil was donated free. Total cost of project was £60.62. 2 were potted up in donated pots, the final 4 going straight into wildlife group wildflower beds.

An invitation to apply for plants went out in the village newsletter - applicants had to quote their address with postcode. They were encouraged to propagate their plants in the winter and distribute any new plants to friends and relatives, ideally letting us know so we could map the gradual diaspora. A separate note went to wildlife group members. We were encouraged by the take-up as this included many residents who had not hitherto expressed any particular interest in wildlife group activities. Each individual received a sheet with growing instructions and a request for them to keep in touch on how things went.

There are two maps attached. One is large scale as we have members throughout Vale of Glamorgan (one in the Valleys). The other is more detailed for Wenvoe where the bulk of the plants were located.

We were particularly struck by the enthusiasm of some residents who were not previously involved (as far as we knew) with wildlife gardening issues”.
