Outreach

As a social enterprise NowSCAN is a coordination framework for conservation work already in progress and also gives individuals and groups the confidence to begin new projects.  Like any organic movement, coordinating networks are born out of the need for collaboration around common cause.  NowSCAN’s nectar point network functions on the basis that there is always room for improving the role of networking within a united conservation movement.  To these ends, NowSCAN will have a presence on the major social media sites and people will be encouraged to set up their own ‘action for pollination’ pages, choosing the site that best fulfils their needs.  People can show their support for NowSCAN’s work by getting on their own social media channels and “liking” NowSCAN or amplifying its message.  Organizations are embracing social media as a tool for advocacy, engagement and mobilization, but as more groups make use of social tools in their programs and campaigns, only a small number are “listening” to see how people are spreading the word across their social networks and to learn what worked and what did not. As scientists or nature activists, social media allows us a chance to keep up with the current research and ideas, to collaborate with our colleagues and friends and people we haven’t even met before, to open up new dialogues and carry on with old ones, but most importantly social media allows us to increase the reach of our stories.

“Monitoring conversations that are taking place on issues and research in your area of expertise will help you identify opportunities (Weidinger, 2012). These opportunities may come in the form of new connections or a chance to leap into a discussion and transform an issue. Social media gives individuals and organizations the power to make an impact in the digital age by crafting messages of science and conservation that are compelling, viral, and easy for people to act on.”
