'An Elementary Treatise on Determinants - with their application to Simultaneous Linear Equations and Algebraical Geometry' published by Macmillan in1867 in brown cloth. Below is the title page of the first edition of Dodgson's only full mathematics textbook, which presents his method for computing the determinant of a square matrix, greatly simplifying what was until then a tedious process of multiple computations. Determinants are useful in the analysis and solution of linear equations. Emerging in connection with the theory of equations, by the nineteenth century determinants had become an increasingly significant area of mathematical study. He had in 1866 published a pamphlet 'Condensation of Determinants' which he read to the Royal Society on the 17th May of that year.
