8. Sylvie and Bruno

This is the first edition of 'Sylvie and Bruno' published by Macmillan in 1889, there were 46 illustrations by Harry Furniss. Only one chapter of the book had appeared before; Bruno's Revenge in 'Aunt Judy's Magazine' (1867/8), See below.

Sylvie and Bruno Concluded was published in 1893 by Macmillan. There were 46 illustrations by Harry Furniss. Some were issued in Dust Jackets and without the gilt rules round the covers, these may have been bound at a later date. The book was issued with an Advertisement loosely inserted (see below). The People's Edition was published in 1898, uniform with the first volume's People's Edition.

'The Story of Sylvie and Bruno' was published by Macmillan in 1904, it is only the parts of the books concerning the two children, all the heavier didactic and society parts are omitted, most of Harry Furniss's illustrations have been retained.

Shown below is a page of 'Bruno's Revenge' from Aunt Judy's May-Day Volume for young people (1868). The illustration is by F Gilbert. This story was the germ of the book 'Sylvie and Bruno' and is one of the chapters of that book.
