5. Pamphlets and Booklets

######################################################

Carroll wrote a large number of pamphlets and only a few are listed here, they are, however, all listed in Williams et al (1979) 'The Lewis Carroll Handbook' Dawson, Kent

The small booklet, 'The New Belfry' was issued in 1872, published by James Parker & Co, Oxford. It is an amusing skit on the 'bald wooden cube erected to contain the bell'. The booklet went into five issues.

'Notes by an Oxford Chiel' Published by James Parker & Co, Oxford in 1874, contains six pamphlets mostly reprints of the original, they are; 1. The New method of Evaluation as applied to Pi. (first printed 1865). 2. The Dynamics of a Parti-cle. (first printed 1865). 3. Facts, Figures and Fancies, (first issued here - see below). 4. The New Belfry of Christ Church. (first published 1872 - see adjacent listing) 5. The Vision of the Three T's, A Threnody (second edition 1873). 6. Blank Cheque, A Fable. (1874 reissue).

An Index to In Memoriam. Published by Edward Moxon in 1862. Issued anonymously, Carroll edited the pamphlet and assisted one of his sisters who compiled it. Issued bound or as loose leaf to bind in the poem.

#######################################################

This pamphlet was privately published in 1875 and first appeared in 'The Fortnightly Review' issue for June 1st 1875. Only 150 were printed. However there is some dispute about its origin, Selwin Goodacre in the 'Book Collector' Autumn 1978 makes a convincing case for the date of the pamphlet to be after 1920 and therefore clearly a forgery.

Published by Douglas Cleverdon, Bristol in 1932, this is a limited edition of 200 copies. The letters were later reprinted in 'Letters to Child-Friends' (1933)

#####################################################

The first separate edition of this leaflet, 'Christmas Greetings' was issued in 1884, it was later reprinted in the People's editions of the Alice books and had originally appeared in 'Phantasmagoria'. For an 'Easter Greeting' see the listing for 'The Hunting of the Snark'.

These two pamphlets were produced by The Lewis Carroll Society in 1977/8 in limited editions, much of the material is reproduced here for the first time.
