1. First Editions of Alice

####################################################################################################################These two title pages are the true 1st editions of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. The one on the left dated 1865 was the withdrawn edition and the text blocks were sent to America where they were bound with the title page on the right and sold there. Overall only 2000 copies were printed although it would appear that only 50 presentation copies left the publisher's office. It was Tenniel who drew Carroll's attention to the poor quality of the pictures and so he asked for the run to be reprinted. The first American edition consisted of 1,000 copies, were bound in England with the new title page below. The second American issue consisted of the remaining 952 copies and were bound in New York. The difference & the most noticeable variation between these two American editions is to be seen in the position of the "BY" in the sixth line. In the first state the letter "B" is directly over the letter "T" in Tenniel in the line below as can be seen here. In the second state the position the letter "B" is to the right of the letter "T" in the line below. The bindings were as shown for the 1st published edition below. All three editions are very rare and command many thousands of pounds at auction.

####################################################################################################################The title page and cover below are the 2nd (first published) British edition of 'Alice'. Around 4000 copies were thought to have been issued although there is some dispute about this. The text had been re-set by the publishers Clay. Some copies have the 'S' inverted in the final line of the Contents listing and these copies are thought to be the earliest state of the edition

The less expensive version of 'Alice', called the 'People's' edition was first published by Macmillan in December 1887, it had been revised and reset.

The Sixpenny series was first published in 1898 by Macmillan in separate editions, both books in hard and paper backs. Shown below is the cover of a combined edition of both books published that year.

The Little Folks Edition was published in 1903, this was an abridged edition with 32 coloured illustrations by Tenniel.

The complete text miniature edition, shown below, was first published in 1907 by Macmillan

####################################################################################################################This is the first complete edition with Tenniel's illustrations in colour, both books are included and it was published by Macmillan in 1911. 16 of the illustrations were made full page and rendered into colour they had been prepared by the artist Harry Theaker towards the end of Tenniel’s life. These fixed the image of Alice with blonde hair, blue dress and striped stockings. There was a new edition of this book published in 1921 with just 8 colour plates after Tenniel by John Macfarlane. Other colour editions followed most notably the 'Children's' edition in 1927
