Below is the first edition of 'The Hunting of the Snark'. It was published in 1876 by Macmillan and contained nine illustrations by Henry Holiday. 10,000 were published many with 'An Easter Greeting' loosely inserted (see below). There were some copies with red bindings (around 100) with a loose page stating; 'From the Author' and the plates each had a tissue protector. Carroll had a few issued in other colours to send to friends and a few have been seen in a grey dust wrapper. The first American edition was published by James R. ======================================================

The first minature edition of 'The Hunting of the Snark' was published by Macmillan in 1910. The poem had been incorporated into 'Rhyme? and Reason?' in 1883 and from 1910 the miniature edition was the only publication of the poem on its own until 1929 when it was reprinted in the 'Cardinal' series.

The 'Easter Greeting' shown here has all the indications of the 1st edition (including the "my" in Roman type face; line 12 on the third page) and is on paper bearing E. Towgood's watermark. While later printings are sometimes found on Towgood paper, none of the later versions share all of the characteristics of both the text and paper. Copies were inserted into the specially bound presentation copies of THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK but also in other 1st editions. Dodgson also gave away individual copies to his young friends.
