6. Poetry 1st editions

This is the 1st edition/1st issue of Phantasmagoria and other Poems, published by Macmillan in 1869. This 1st issue does not have; author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' on the title page, 600 were printed. A minature edition was issued in 1911 but this only reprinted the poems from 'Rhyme? and Reason?' with a few additions.

Below is the first edition of 'The Hunting of the Snark'. It was published in 1876 by Macmillan and contained nine illustrations by Henry Holiday. 10,000 were published many with 'An Easter Greeting' loosely inserted (see below). There were some copies with red bindings (around 100) with a loose page stating; 'From the Author' and the plates each had a tissue protector. Carroll had a few issued in other colours to send to friends and a few have been seen in a grey dust wrapper. The first American edition was published by James R. Osgood in 1877, the format was smaller, just 16mo. Macmillan didn't publish it in America until 1898.

The first minature edition of 'The Hunting of the Snark' was published by Macmillan in 1910. The poem had been incorporated into 'Rhyme? and Reason?' in 1883 and from 1910 the miniature edition was the only publication of the poem on its own until 1929 when it was reprinted in the 'Cardinal' series.
The 'Easter Greeting' shown here has all the indications of the 1st edition (including the "my" in Roman type face; line 12 on the third page) and is on paper bearing E. Towgood's watermark. While later printings are sometimes found on Towgood paper, none of the later versions share all of the characteristics of both the text and paper. Copies were inserted into the specially bound presentation copies of THE HUNTING OF THE SNARK but also in other 1st editions. Dodgson also gave away individual copies to his young friends.

'Three Sunsets and other Poems' was published by Macmillan in 1898 it included 12 illustrations by E. Gertrude Thomson. The poems were mainly taken from Part II of 'Phantasmagoria' plus other poems, all of which had appeared elsewhere. The book was reprinted once in the same year and a few copies have pale blue cloth.
Further Nonsense' was published by Fisher Unwin in 1926 this is a collection of poems and prose (35 in all) taken from a variety of sources. The book is illustrated with 16 drawings by H M Bateman plus 4 photographs. The first edition contains an erratum slip at page 12. It was reprinted in the same year and there was a US edition published by Appleton also in 1926. (the picture below is too dark as the book is of a lighter orange than shown)

'For the Train' was published by Archer in 1932, it contained 5 poems originally published in 'The Train' Magazine in the 1850s and included the short story 'Novelty and Romancement' plus some other snippets concerning trains by Carroll. There is a limited edition of 100 numbered copies signed by Hugh J. Schonfield. The book was published to celebrate Carroll's 100th birthday.
#######################################################'Useful and Instructive Poetry' was published by Geoffrey Bles in 1954. It contains Carroll's earliest work, written in 1845 when he was 13.
