R1a1a Ashkenazi Levites Who Had Done Full Y-DNA Testing as of 2014

[This page, prepared on July 31, 2014, is included as a matter of historical interest. (As of July 2021, nearly 250 R1a-Y2619 Ashkenazi Levites had done full Y-DNA testing.)]

As of July 31, 2014, seven R1a1a Ashkenazi Levites had received results for full Y-DNA testing.

One man (FTDNA kit no. 251286, the descendant of Zerachia Horowitz) had received test results from Full Genomes Corp. He is five steps from the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode at 111markers. He has the STR marker values DYS537=12 and DYS650=20, which appear to be characteristic of men who are near the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode. He is a known Horowitz descendant who has the STR marker value DYS495=16, which appears to be characteristic of descendants of the Horowitz rabbinical family.

One man (FTDNA kit no. 65218, the descendant of Aron Yochvedovitch) had received Big Y test results from FTDNA. He is five steps from the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode at 111markers. He has the STR marker values DYS537=12 and DYS650=20, which appear to be characteristic of men who are near the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode. He is not a known Horowitz descendant but he has the STR marker value DYS495=16, which appears to be characteristic of descendants of the Horowitz rabbinical family.

One man (FTDNA kit no. 248865, the descendant of Yonkel Velvel Vodovoz (or Arbit) had received Big Y test results from FTDNA. He is four steps from the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode at 111 markers. He has the STR marker values DYS537=12 and DYS650=20, which appear to be characteristic of men who are near the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode. He is not a known Horowitz descendant and has the modal STR marker value DYS495=17, rather than the STR marker value DYS495=16, which appears to be characteristic of descendants of the Horowitz rabbinical family.

One man (FTDNA kit no. 241703, the descendant of Salamon Wexler) had received test results from Full Genomes Corp. He is 12 steps from the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode at 111markers. He has the STR marker values DYS537=11 and DYS650<20, which appear to be characteristic of men who are far from the R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite mode.

We have three sets of full Y-DNA test results for men who had their Y-DNA tested for scientific purposes; those men have not done Y-DNA STR testing. (Full Genomes Corp. and the YFull team have analyzed the SNPs of those men.) The first man, Misha Angrist (PGP4), had his full genome tested as part of the Personal Genomes Project.

The remaining two men were tested by Rootsi & Behar et al. in connection with their December 2013 paper on the origins of R1a1a Ashkenazi Levites. One of those men (GS20424) is identified in the Rootsi & Behar paper as Ashkenazi Levite (16207). The other man (P3) is identified in the paper as Ashkenazi Jew (P3). As discussed below, the SNP testing confirms that the man identified as an Ashkenazi Jew is an R1a1a Ashkenazi Levite (whose family, presumably, lost its tradition of Levite descent).
