Snapshot
Step 1: Revisit, revise, & update your Vocabulary journal & create flashcards
Don't have your journal? Want a fresh start? To check what you have?
Check these resources to get you going this week:
- Slides with visual vocab
- Warm-up Vocab
- These lists on our Quizlet: Characteristics, Adjectives, & Family
Create flashcards using your journal and/or the vocab lists above. You should have a minimum of 50, and you will need them for the remainder of the assignment. *special notecards are not necessary, make use of what you have at home*
Journal
- 3 columns {Spanish / Picture / English
- Leave spaces for making connections between words & pictures, 10/24/7 & studying
Flashcards
- Spanish on one side
- English on the other
- Leave space to later jot notes/drawings in pencil
Step 2: Choose 3 of the following strategies to practice vocabulary
1. Quizlet - Any mode of study on our class Quizlet page 2 times for 15 minutes each. Login with your student email!
2. Open Sort - Sort the flashcards into groupings of your choice, it doesn't matter how big or small. Practice the words as you place and pick up the groups.
- Examples:
- sad, happy, angry (very specific)
- emotions, jobs, family (broad ideas)
- words that describe you, and words that don't (2 groups), repeat for someone else in your family what do you have in common?
3. Hidden Figure Drawing - Draw yourself or a family member using hidden vocab words. Example: You hide the word "ojos" inside your eyes, "cafe" inside your brown hair, "camisa" on your shirt, etc.
4. One Word Image - Use vocab to create your own character, write and draw. If you are struggling to be creative, use your flashcards to create either or questions and flip a coin or pull blindly. Ex: is your character: alto o bajo? feliz o triste? gordo o flaco? comico o serio? In your journal or digital tool of your choice is fine.
5. Frayer Model cards - Pick 6 words you find hard, or that you really want to learn well. Use those words to make Frayer model cards, in your journal or digitally, see example here.
6. Teach - Teach a family member or friend How to greet and talk about their day.
7. Create - Create your own unique way to study!
Step 3: Application
- Practice using the language orally. Ask a family member or friend to be a volunteer, describe them the best you can without your flashcards. Go back and add details using your flashcards.
- Example:
- You say, "Mi hermana, Se llama Jessica, pelo largo, ojos cafes, alta, seria, estudiante, hermana, amiga"
- If you go back to your flashcards you may find more words to describe:
- Now you add, "quiere ser doctora" "tiene quince años" (progress from words to phrases!)
- Example:
- Remember end of year goal is Novice - Mid: I use words and phrases, and we have been out of school for a couple weeks now. Everyone wants to be fluent, but you have to start somewhere. Practice, practice, practice and mistakes are great!
Level up: optional extension
- Use your words to create a writing about the person you talked about. You can even grab a photo from a magazine, or think of your favorite celebrity or character in a book. Write as much as you can. Stretch yourself to write in sentences.
