Pens

Added 18 April 2013

These are fun to make, require a bit of care, and not a lot of time or timber. To get a durable finish I use cellulose sanding sealer, two coats of melamine then burnishing cream. This gives good durability and a high gloss. These are just a sample of the many pens and pencils I've made and given away.

For the 4 pens, the mechanical bits are from Turner's Retreat and are very good quality. From the left the wood is Pao Rosa, Olive, Ebony and Cherry.

With the Myford ML7 lathe it is now very easy to make mandrels and mandrel bushes to suit any of the pen mechanisms I use.

The pencil is Ebony and the ballpoint pen is Walnut. The gold coloured parts were bought as a kit from Peter Child and they have a good quality feel. I bought the mandrel required to mount the work in a lathe from the same place.
