If you turn off-centre and rotate the tool instead of the work or build up the blank from segments there are a great deal of design possibilities open to the woodturner. Just look at what was achieved by John Jacob Holtzapffel in the late 19th century and people like the late Ray Allen or Hans Weissflog today. Beautiful and inspirational.

It is ornamental turning, particularly lattices, and segmented turning that interest me. Providing me with the challenge of working out how to make something, the pleasure of making the tooling and developing the methods, and occasionally the satisfaction of making something unique and worthwhile.
