Bikeway Issues

The Cities of Racine and Kenosha, the Village of Mt. Pleasant and Kenosha County recently completed and adopted bicycle and pedestrian master plans. A review of these plans shows there are gaps for safe bicycle transit to the Foxconn campus from areas within these municipalities. To the west, the Villages of Union Grove and Burlington in Racine County have no adopted plans. The Village of Mt. Pleasant plan shows proposed trail(s) along Hoods Creek coming from the north and east generally. The majority of this stretch is proposed for the floodplain of the creek and appears to be a trail not a path in the right of way.

The following is a list of missing connections between existing or proposed bikeways which creates gaps in travel between locations. These gaps need to be addressed in order to create a better bikeway transit throughout Racine county.

  • There is a gap in the existing trail between six mile road and seven mile road near HWY 32.
  • There is a large gap in the existing MRK Trail to points west, out to the Foxconn campus.
  • There is a large gap from the Milwaukee Oak Leaf Trail (County Line Road) to the south and west.
  • There is a gap at the current terminus of the Racine-Sturtevant Trail to the west between Hwy 11 to the south and HWY 20 (Washington Ave) to the north.
  • There is a gap from the west (Union Grove/Burlington) or no facilites at all heading to the east.
  • There is a gap in western Kenosha County to the south generally to western Racine County to the north.
  • In many instances, there may be facilities in place but they are in the right of way and may be uncomfortable for the casual cyclist.
