Science at Jarvis Brook

“Science literacy is the artery through which the solutions of tomorrow's problems flow.” Neil DeGrasse Tyson.

At Jarvis Brook we realise, in an increasingly technological age, the importance of readying our children for modern life. As such, the teaching of Science is a vital part of our curriculum.

Children are naturally curious and the study of Science harnesses their desire to learn through investigation and asking questions. Here at Jarvis Brook, we believe that every child is a scientist. Our Science teaching:

• Acknowledges that children will come to their learning with questions and observations about what they see in the world around them. We use these as a basis for their learning

• Focuses on learning through practical exploration through an enquiry-based curriculum

• Uses our outdoor environment effectively in order to stimulate scientific learning

• Nurtures children’s curiosity by providing them with a rich learning environment both in and outdoors

• Harnesses the children’s feelings of awe and wonder for the universe and, through this, teaches respect for the beauty of the natural world

• Helps the children to become organised and focused scientists through developing their investigative skills; deepening their understanding of the language of Science; encouraging them to challenge scientific evidence and giving them opportunities to collaborate with others

• Enables children to make links between scientific ideas; how they are developed in other disciplines and beyond the classroom.

The skills that the children develop through the study of Science: the ability to ask and answer focused questions; problem solving; effective use of language and good communication; the ability to work collaboratively and to be critical thinkers are vital to success in all aspects of life.
