CRAFTS

{ Traditional crafts/trades, and maker/hacker-spaces }

Organisations, Meetups & Workshops, Markets, Directory

Compared to traditional craft workshops, a makerspace provides tools for members and/or the community for projects with an emphasis on traditional tools (e.g. saws, drills etc for wood and metal work). A hackerspace may provide similar functions, but emphasises high-tech resources, e.g. laser cutters and 3D printers.

Major Organisations/Groups

[Also see the Arts and Design page, as some organisations have shared interests]

Crafts (Traditional)

Makerspaces (Low-Tech)

  • Men's Sheds of WA (MSWA) | Link to PDF Listing of Sheds by Location - a list of WA Men's Sheds, i.e. community-based, non-profit, non-commercial organisations accessible to all men and whose primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and welcoming environment where men can work on meaningful projects. A major objective is to advance the health and well being of male members and to encourage social inclusion.
  • Women's Shed - the Wangarang women's shed is designed to run in a similar fashion to the well established “Men’s Shed”. We believe that this project is the first of its kind in NSW and runs with a trades based theme rather than the typical women’s activities like sewing and craft. Its aim is to offer a safe environment for all women, who have little to no support and want to learn new skills to enhance their independence.

Hackerspaces (High-Tech)

  • The Perth Artifactory - a Hackerspace/Makerspace in Perth, Western Australia. We currently occupy a large warehouse unit in Osborne Park and which is populated with tools, technology, desks and workstations. Essentially we are a communal workshop where members who join get access to the tools and machinery in the space to make anything that they want. We are run by volunteers(members) and currently have over 65 financial members and hundreds of regular visitors for our workshops and events.
  • The Swan's Nest - Swan’s Nest is Blazing Swan’s warehouse space in Fremantle. It’s where the Blaze is born each year. Our warehouse space is available for short and long term use for Blazing Swan theme camps, art & construction projects, mutant art cars, and community projects. Has cutting, metal, wood and tech workshops for mixed uses.
  • West Coast Makers | MeetUp Listing - In the WCM space you’ll find people into electronics, CNC, 3D Printing, embedded software, metal working, music, art, video, CAD, electric cars and much more.
