Project Definition

IntroductionTo start, we are building a Belly Tank Lakester to compete in the SCTA land speed racing competition. Our car will compete in the IGL class. We have chosen this as our mechanical engineering senior project at SFSU of spring 2010.

The Purpose (Mission)

  • Build a complex set of systems all working together

  • Display our knowledge and understanding of mechanical engineering

  • Go Fast!!

These are the targets we want to meet

  • Beat the current speed record for our class which is 160mph

  • Finish the car by 2010 race season

  • Build a safe car that will pass SCTA safety standards

This is how our organization will gain

  • Working together to solve challenging problems

  • Learn from each other

  • Develop new skills

  • Refine our own skills

Objectives

We are trying to build a race car from salvaged used parts from old cars and modern vehicles to try and compete in SCTA IGL class in May, 2010. The current speed record for this class is 160.236 MPH, we are trying to design our car to go 200 MPH. We are doing this to use our knowledge in mechanical systems while applying what we have learned in all of our engineering classes. The body, a P-38 external fuel tank, is a iconic shape in land speed racing.

Measurable Objectives:

  1. SCTA approval of our race car

  2. Be able to participate during 2010 SCTA race season

Deliverables

Race Car

Project Constraints

We are trying to keep the budget low by using used parts, but our budget is still projected around $5-7 thousand dollars. Our budget is divided into 5 categories: Body-$1000, Drivetrain-$1000, Chassis-$1000, Steering/Suspension/Breaks-$1000, Wheels/Tires-$1000. Our budget is a range from $5-7 thousand because we know there are always miscellaneous parts or problems that affect the build.
