Longhorsley WI

We had an interesting talk in July from a previous Manager of Newcastle City Hall. Despite having very few facilities the location was the key to its success as a Concert and Conference venue, attracting renowned Orchestras and Musicians from around the world.

We had a 'Grand Day Out' in August when 14 Members went to Bamburgh. After a delicious lunch we built sandcastles, paddled and enjoyed good company in the shadow of the magnificent Castle.

At our next Meeting on 1st September at 7.30pm we welcome John Sadler to talk about the Border Wars. Visitors will be very welcome, please contact myself or Mary Stephenson for any information.

Wingates Bridge Club

Wingates Bridge Club has now returned to playing in person at the village hall.  It now meets in person every Tuesday from 7.30pm during the summer - and plans to play online from October 4, before going back to in person next April.

The club feels this hybrid model is the way to operate in the future. But this may change - please watch this space.

New members of all levels will be very welcome, newcomers to bridge in particular. Don't be worried about skill levels - this is a very sociable club and lessons will be given. A basic knowledge of whist is helpful but not essential. The club will be organising a try-outs evening soon.

And members who've dropped out will be warmly welcomed back, too.

Neil Fowler 07770 641385 neildfowler1@aol.com is the main contact, but also Robert Famelton robertfamelton@gmail.com.

Do come along - it is a genuinely fun game.

Visit to Eshott Airfield

Although it is nearby, most of the 20 members of the History Society had not visited Eshott Airfield when they met up with Richard Pike for a guided tour. The airfield has its own website at eshottairfield.com but we were interested in its history.

From the start of the Second World War the airfield was used for training pilots on the newly designed Spitfire aircraft, and 78 of these were based at the airfield. Richard showed us aircraft kept at the airfield which were up to 70 years old. Some like the Spitfire were designed for one person operation and were a challenge for those learning to fly with often a minimum of instruction.

We were impressed at the amount of work needed to keep the planes flying. The cost of the work is going up fast because of the shortage of skilled engineers. Some parts can cost more than a complete plane. There are historic vehicles on the site, and there are plans to re-erect a Second World War hangar. More recently the Airfield has been a centre for light aircraft, and it is also visited for refuelling by helicopters.

Penny Ford warmly thanked Richard for his time and excellent introduction to the story of the Airfield, especially as he had to stand in at short notice.

There is a tearoom, which is open from 10am to 4pm on Thursdays to Sundays. To get there follow the signs off the A1.
